Preserving over-ridden page system spacing while adding more bars .

I have a one-page, over-ridden passage that contains two flows, and I’ve created system spacings that I would like to preserve:

I would like to create a third flow, to start on a second page, but my Layout Options already specify that flows should appear on the same page, and my first page’s spacing depends on maintaining that setting.

How can I achieve this?

Similarly, when I to try to do this without creating a new flow, but instead by adding more bars at the end of page one, Dorico adds the new bars as a new system on the same page, which destroys my deliberate system spacings. Is there any way of forcing Dorico to add that new system on the next page?

Many thanks for any insights you care to share!

The new flow will only squeeze onto this page if Dorico thinks there’s space for it. Otherwise, it will go onto the next page. (That’s why the option is about “allowing” flows on the same page, not “forcing”.)

If you have already set the vertical spacing settings for this layout to be fairly close to what you ultimately wanted, e.g. quite generous spacing perhaps, then Dorico will be less likely to think the new flow will fit.

It ultimately depends on what exactly you’ve done, as to how adding the new flow will affect the music.

As a last resort, you could always edit the page template music frame chain to include only these two flows, and manually draw in the 3rd (and any further flows) onto pages manually.

Thank-you, Lillie – I appreciate the solutions and your speedy reply!

I just experimented with the Layout Options inter-system vertical spacing until I found a spacing that – as you explained – persuaded Dorico to add the new flow to a new page. (Obviously, I have a lot more to learn about the kind of inter-system spacing I typically need. . . )

You will get the best, most reliable results if you adjust Layout Options values for spacing first, before adding any manual overrides. You will also have layouts that are much more flexible.

Thanks.

When creating teaching materials, I usually enter the entire section of music first, and then, gradually, decide on what comments or analyses I wish to add.
Since I don’t know the spacing I will require until then, how should I go about choosing Layout Options vertical spacing?

You can adjust Layout Options at any time, and the whole layout will update accordingly. Therefore, you can adjust your settings whenever you like.

The workflow that involves the fewest changes involves waiting until you’re happy with the content (and aren’t likely to add many more comments etc), and then adjust the settings.

I expect you could also add a Frame Break to the first note of the new Flow to start it on a new page even though your layout “allows” flows to start in the middle of a page.

Thanks so much, Lillie! (Sorry for the delay. . . )
Are there Dorico videos that deal with these considerations?

Thank-you, Derrek! Your reply opens up an entirely new perspective for me – I hadn’t realized that Frame Breaks even existed!

Try these:

Thanks, Lillie.
