Preventing expression options in VST instances from resetting

Hello, new user of VST Live and a nomad from Mainstage. I am very grateful to have found an alternative for live performance for Windows users.

I am using a VST across multiple layers and parts, and inside of this VST there are different options for expression I can control with the keyboard. (To be specific, this is the VSCO Chamber Orchestra VST.) For example, I can use the lower notes of the keyboard to make the strings sound pizzicato, legato, tremolo, and so on.

When working in VST Live, I can adjust these expression parameters across my layers, parts, and songs, and it all works fine and each layer acts independently. But here is my issue: When I close the program and reopen the file, the expression parameters within each instance of the VST reset… So the strings ALL sound legato (the default), even if I had set them to another expression. I then have to go back and reprogram them… every… single… time.

In short: Am I able to save expression options within each instance of a VST? Is anyone familiar with VSCO Chamber Orchestra that can help? I would be forever grateful.

Hi and welcome @pianoman0391!

Sounds like a bug.

I found this website here. Can I install the “Community Free Edition” to get the issue reproduced? If yes, could you please post a step-by-step instructions to trigger it? With that, I’ll dig in. If not, I need to contact the company first.

Have a nice day,
Michael.

Hi Michael!

This is the version I am using. I have used this version with other DAWs and the key switches work.

Here’s what I have done:

  • Started a new project in VST Live.
  • Opened a new layer in the default Song 1/Part 1.
  • Loaded the VSCO Rompler VST into the layer (having already put the VST into the plugins folder.)
  • Opened the VST to select the instrument (for example, the Violin) and used the virtual keyboard in the VST itself to select the expression (marked by yellow keys at the bottom of the virtual keyboard. I believe the lower C is Arco, C# is pizzicato, D is tremolo, and so on.)
  • Set my zone for the instrument to match only the keys for the selected instrument.
  • Tested the VST using my MIDI keyboard to ensure the sound is what I want.
  • Saved the file.
  • Exited the program.
  • Reopened VST Live and the file.

When I reopen the file, the key switch has gone away and the expression is set back to Arco (the default lower C.)

Please let me know if you can replicate this and if you have any questions. I have not yet tried the version of the VST you linked but I will give that a shot as well when I have a chance. I appreciate your help!

Checking in on this issue. I have attempted to recreate my patches using Soundfonts and have been getting by. However, if I were to use better VSTs or instruments in the Kontakt Player, I worry that they will not keep their settings every time I reload VST Live. Please advise; thanks!

Plugins retain their own settings and are supposed to report those when beeing asked to. So when you save anything with a plugin in it, VST Live will ask the plugin to provide its current state, which is saved into the project. Likewise, when the project is opened again, after the plugin is activated, it will get back exactly what it had provided when saving. If that doesn’t work as expected, you need to ask its vendor.
