Print shrinks music

Why does the music fill the whole page in engrave mode but leaves white areas outside the frame in print mode? Just came over from Finale 27, using MacBook Ventura 13.6.9

Welcome to the forum @donaldgiven.

Could you share a screenshot of Engrave and Print separately?

And which print button did you use? Let me quote myself from another thread:

It will only let me use one image at a time, sorry. Here is one:

Upper left corner buttons for engrave and print. This is what happens: I have the music filling almost the entire page in engrave mode and then in print mode there’s these big white areas. I and the people I direct are old and need the music as large as possible with minimal page turns.

Here’s the other:

I think because it has to display two full pages with a fixed side panels.

It’s actually just that the print preview isn’t very good about odd page sizes; it pulls the list of available paper sizes from a printer driver, regardless of the fact that you’re actually about to export (probably to PDF).

Ignore the preview: the resultant PDF will have exactly the same page size and margins as defined in Layout Options (and displayed in Write and Engrave modes).

I think the print preview is set to the wrong paper size. What are your page dimensions in Layout Options? Looks a bit like Letter to me. It’s possible the printer settings are still A4 (Dorico being European, after all), and Dorico tries to fit your layout on it, at least in the preview.
Try this: in Print Mode, go first to the Destination: Printer section, and make sure the paper size is Letter (or something else that fits your layout). Then go back to the Destination: Graphics panel and proceed with the export.

I don’t understand what. that means, sorry. Using Finale I’ve never been able to do booklet print and was so ecited to be able to do it in Dorico. What I usually had to do in Finale was export the pages and set them up in Swift Publisher in booklet form, then print to PDF. Really need to be able to print booklet form so the choir members don’t get the pages out of order or lose pages, which causes enormous loss of time in rehearsal.

I think @hamsandwichnow was just referring to the window size and the left/right zones that are displayed on your screen.

Yeah, the page layout was indeed set to “quarto metric demy” or some such. I reset it to letter size and my spacing is now different in engrave. Will have to go back through and make adjustments, then try again. I will get back with y’all. Thanks so much for the input!

This may sound silly, but I’ve googled this and can’t seem to find the way to hide the properties box. I can’t even see the score I’m working on! I’ve tried getting completely out of Dorico and back in, but the box is still there.

Do you mean the Properties panel in the lower zone at the bottom of the project window? You can hide or show it with Command-8 (macOS) or Ctrl+8 (Windows).

Thanks. Uncovered the music. Have been trying to set the paper size. The online instructions are in the screenshot with the print options panel to the right, and as you can see the things they refer to are not there (paper size, orientation, scale). Am I looking in the wrong place? Thanks.

(Library Menu >) Layout Options > Page Setup. This setting is in fact independent from the paper size you might be actually printing it on, which is ruled by the settings on the right side panel in Print Mode (as in your screenshot). Of course, prints look better if these settings match.

By. the way, I tried saving the print version to PDF, and the booklet format was completely lost. The program saved letter-sized pages centered in the middle of 11x17 tabloid paper in landscape format in the PDF file. So I guess Dorico won’t print booklet format to PDF after all. What I will probably do is export the pages as I did in FInale. Too bad. It would have been a real timesaver for me.

Yes, Dorico can print booklets, I do it all the time. But you skipped a few steps.

Go to Printer. Choose Job type: Booklet, and the right paper size in landscape orientation to accommodate a 2-page spread (like 11"x17"). Under Duplex Printing choose Both sides automatically, and tick the checkbox for Reverse Order of outward pages. You should now see a preview of page spreads for a booklet.
You can either proceed with printing, by pressing Print, or, if you want a PDF of this booklet, go back to Graphics and do Export. Thing to remember, even if you only want to export the PDF, you need to make the right Printer settings as described above.

Thanks for your reply. I had already done all the steps you prescribed. The bottom line seems to be that Graphics-Export works and Print-Save to PDF does not. I was trying to do the latter. One thing that’s a little confusing for a newcomer, however, is that there is no PDF on File-Export menu. Didn’t realize I would gain an “export” button in the bottom right when selecting graphics for destination.

BTW, Print still shrinks the music. It does, however, export unshrunk. Don’t know exactly why it has to look different in Print mode than what you actually get when you print. Should be WYSIWYG, I would think. This I would call a bug that needs fixing.
