Printing side by side 9x12 on 12x18 paper

I have a printer that prints 12x18 and have been using MS publisher for printing. To date I have been using MS publisher.

The articles/videos I have seen have not directly addressed this issue and what I’ve been able to find on this has been quite confusing.

Is there an article/video that directly answers this question

Or can anyone here provide explicit direction?

I have occasionally done this.

When printing a 9x12 PDF from Adobe Acrobat reader, the steps I needed were:

  1. in Page Setup, choose 12x18 as the paper size
    and
  2. in Printer > Layout, set to 2 pages per sheet

I would just about always need to do some experimenting with the scaling of the printout. This usually involved printing a few test pages, one at a time, at various percentages to see what the result was. Because of how Reader decides what the margins will be and exactly where the image is placed on the page, I have sometimes needed to re-do the original document with different left and/or right margins to compensate and then save it as a PDF again. Other applications might give more or less control over size and placement on the printed page. Some would need the page orientation to be chosen as Landscape, while others will automatically do that if Portrait has been chosen and then 2 pages per sheet is selected. Don’t be afraid to try different settings, and keep a note of what works and what doesn’t.

PDF music binder is a great app for this.

Dorico is great at this. That’s how I print most of my parts. Here’s what the settings look like:

It even has the option to “print odd final page on ___,” but unfortunately that would only work if you’re printing 2-up on 11x17 and have your tabloid paper in a printer tray. I’m not aware of a printer that takes 12x18 in a tray, only the fold-out paper feeder, and if paper is loaded there it overrides any tray preferences. At least that has been my experience.

And here are the relevant pages in the manual:

Interesting … now I just need to know how to do it with 12x18.

FWIW: There are many printers out there that print this size. Most go up to 13x19. I use an older Epson WF-7110; my daughter just got a WF-7820; There is also an ECO-Tank model (don’t know the model) but it’s quite expensive.

There are a couple of caveats. They do not have duplex on sizes greater than letter. So you need to print on one side at a time. To collate properly you have to print things in a specified order. For an 8 page part there are 8 sides. To print in booklet format, the pages that need to be printed at a time are: 1,8; 7,2; 3,6 and 5,4 … so it can be a bit of a hassle to print, say a 80 page score or 20 or so Violin parts.

My process in going from Finale is to print XPS files, then separate the pages to individual tiffs and using an MS Publisher macro to format the parts.

I use the Scoring Notes “Batch Booklet” app (linked earlier in the thread) whenever I need to print booklets.

Thanks for the information … however, after reviewing the document it does not appear to do what I need.

Specifically: To print side by side 9x12 pages (12x18 paper) directly from Dorico. Since my printer does not duplex this size, I need to print individual pages in the correct order selecting them two at a time, then sending the paper through again with different pages selected to print the second side. This needs to be repeated for each sheet (i.e. four 9x12 pages). A tad tedious but it works well.

Currently I have tried many combinations of settings on both the printer and Dorico and have yet to find anything that works. At this time I am only trying to print two pages side by side 12x18 paper.

The pdf option just adds an extra step and sizing and printing the exact pages needed doesn’t work very well.

So, let’s go back to the original question: What settings are needed for printing two 9x12 pages on 12x18 paper in Dorico. If the answer is above please specify again.

Can this help?

You must set it to scale to fit if needed. There are more options hidden on the page.

I mounted A4 on both A6 and A2 and it worked fine.

Thank you for the suggestions …. however, I’m looking to print 9x12 within Dorico and not using pdf’s as an interim step. From what I think I have seen in the assorted videos suggests that this can be done. However, I am unable to get it to work.

OK. It might work. I have no experience in that. Sorry.

Perhaps it would be a recommended ‘extension’ in a future version of the manual to describe the most common output methods, as this seems to cause some questions, at least as long as it is made from within Dorico.

Does setting the Job type to Booklet (instead of 2-up) and Duplex Printing to Both Sides Manually (where it will prompt you to finish after you’ve flipped the paper) get you to what you need?
