Problem drawing articulations in Key Editor

I set up my articulation maps, but when I go to write in specific articulations, I have to zoom in really far to make sure my pencil lands either on, or just before the beginning of the midi note. Is this expected? I thought clicking anywhere in the shaded articulation area under the midi note would automatically capture the entire note length.

Here’s a short vid of what I’m talking about.

Thanks for your help!

It appears that you are unable to enter articulations aligned with the grid because the “Snap” feature in the Key Editor is turned off.

Turning on the Snap button in the toolbar should allow you to enter articulations aligned with the grid (the button is located to the left of where “Grid” is displayed).

Snap is turned on in the Project window, but when you look at the Key Editor toolbar, it appears to be turned off.

Oh, I see! But will activating Snap in the KE make my articulations align with the note starts, or just the snap value? I sometimes have my notes start a little off-grid to humanize the performance.

(I would check rn but am away from my DAW— thank you so much for your help!)

You can change the articulations way before the Note you want it to start on, by alot. Turn Snap off and draw in the articulation you want anywhere before the 1st Note-on you want to play it. You can be totally sloppy drawing them in.

That’s exactly the reason why I like my articulations to be attributes, not directions.

There are several settings for the snap function.
If you click the area labeled “Grid,” you can enable snapping in various ways.

In your case, I think you’ll be able to achieve the desired results by selecting settings such as “Event” or “Grid + Event + Cursor.”

By configuring it this way, you can enter articulations at the exact timing that matches the note, even for “note events that are off the grid.”

But there is no need to do this. All you need to do is start the Articulation change somewhere after the Note-on of the last Note you want to play the previous Articulation and before the Note-on of the first Note you want to play the new Articulation. Typically that’s a fairly large range. By trying to align the Articulations to Note events you make it harder, not easier to get your desired results.

Thank you.
I fully understand the points you are making.
In fact, I also typically follow the same procedure you described during my own editing work.

My intention was to explain that the workflow bluescreen is looking for is indeed feasible, while also touching upon other practical editing approaches. Thanks to the excellent supplementary information provided by you and alin89c, the discussion proceeded smoothly. I appreciate it.

I hope bluescreen is able to choose the method that best suits their needs.

Thank you, guys. You helped me figure out that my problem wasn’t really setting the right snap value, but changing my articulations from Direction to Attribute. This was driving me crazy. I’m going to go back to my articulation maps and change them to Attribute as @alin89c suggested.

Thank you so much! This community is amazing.
