I am trying to enter a simple passage of triplet eighth notes. I followed the Dorico instructions, both by clicking on the tuplet symbol and by clicking the semicolon key and entering 3:2.. In each case, Dorico enters one triplet (three eighth notes) and then reverts to non-triplet entry. The instructions seem to say that triplet input will continue until it is ended (by colon or the escape key). Am I doing something wrong?
Clicking on both is not necessary and may be what stops Dorico from continuing the tuplets. After choosing the rhythmic value of the note I want, I just press the semicolon key and 3 to start a series of similar triplets.
How are you advancing the caret?
If it is with the arrow keys then this will then tuplet input will be turned off.
My first tuplet actually consisted of a rest plus two notes. To input the rest, I used the arrow key. Dorico accepted the first tuplet correctly (rest-note-note) but reverted to non-tuplet input for the next beat.
I suppose I can input a note instead of the rest and then go back and delete the note to get what I want, but this seems tedious.
Try using the space bar to “input” a rest, instead of the arrow key. The space bar will advance the caret by the currently selected note duration; to me, that feels most like “inputting” an implicit rest of a given duration. The arrow key advances the caret by the duration of the rhythmic grid.
So I would:
- Select the eighth note tool
- Start tuplet mode
- Press space for the eighth rest
- Press note names for the two eighth notes
- Still in tuplet mode at this point!
I have a thread about “sticky tuplets” to keep enter triplets without having to reselect the triplet symbol. If that’s what you want, I will search and add the link.
