Problem in MIDI Editor

Hello All,
I get this same problem in Cubase SE3 and Cubase LE5, and I hope someone can set me straight.

I import a MIDI file and it plays fine. Then I go into the Key Editor to alter some parameters. I go to the Control Display and select Velocity or Pitchbend or Pan, and the changes I make can be heard in the playback. But when I select other parameters, like Sustain or Expression, nothing happens to the playback. Why can I change some parameters and not others? FYI, I am using a software synth for output, not a hardware MIDI device.

And you know for sure, the software synth or its loaded patch does support all those parameters…?
