I have my AKAI MK261 keyboard plugged into my mac mini via usb. This also powers the keyboard. I see the midi coming in but cannot get it tio trigger any of my software instruments! Any clues guys? BTW it works perfectly in Logic Pro X

Is the track’s Input set to the All MIDI Inputs? Double-check in the Studio > Studio Setup > MIDI Ports Setup, if AKAI is part of the All MIDI Inputs, please.
Double-check the Preferences > MIDI > MIDI Filters. Make sure the Notes are not filtered out.
I checked all those tests that you described and all are OK Here’ a screenshot…as you can see the window that indicates incoming midi is active but no triggering od=f the software instrumen occurs.

Could you attach the screenshot of the Preferences > MIDI > MIDI Filter, please? Also make sure, the MIDI Port is not in use for any Remote Device, including the Chord Pad, please. If you share more screen shots, we could see more.
