Projects-files lost connection to VSTlive 3 and can't be opened by double click (minor issue)

Hello,
It’s a trivial problem, but it’s annoying me:
I hadn’t uninstalled VSTlive 2 and also installed VSTlive 3.
When I double-clicked on a project, Windows 11 chose VSTlive 2, but at least the .vlprj files still had the VSTlive icon.
Then I uninstalled VSTlive 2 so I could continue working with VSTlive 3.
Unfortunately, I can no longer open any projects by double-clicking because the association is no longer there.
Similarly, there is no VSTlive icon under “Open with…”, only “VSTlive.exe”.
However, the shortcut on the desktop has the icon.
I have tried several times to uninstall everything (including VSTlive.ini).
I reinstalled it using the Download Assistant…no success.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post about such a minor issue.

When you click “opens with” select “more apps”. Scroll down to the bottom of the list and select “look for another app on this PC” which will bring up a file browser. Navigate to your VSTL folder and pick the executable.

Dear Clive,

thank you.

of course I tried that a few times but it doesn’t work.

Everytime that I click on the VSTlive3.exe (shown WITH Icon) in the Steinberg folder the window shows the same as in the screenshot.

I went through all advice from windows and google. deleted “IconCache.db”, tried to connect manually with “standard apps”…there the Icon is also not to see just “VSTlive.exe”

Of course opening the app and choosing the file is a workaround, but for me it feels a little bit “damaged” and it drives me a little crazy….

But thank you for caring :victory_hand:

It wasn’t clear to me that you had done the final part of my suggestion from your original post.

The reason that you’re seeing the wrong icon for VSTL is that windows still has that file association in place for v2 but cannot find VSTL2 in order to extract its icon. It looks like the v3 installer does not overwrite the v2 association, which is not always useful.

Icon cache is literally a load of icons referenced against the program files. It just stops windows having to extract the icon every time it wants to display it. Deleting it just makes Windows recreate it and gradually populate it.

Your desktop icon has the correct picture because it points directly at the app.

Have a look at this as a way of getting rid of the file associations. Once you have done that you should be able to get it working properly by creating the association manually as I suggested.

Dear Clive,

once again: Thank you very much!

I’ve tried all the 3 methods…still no sucess…still no Icon under “Open with…” still no way to open VSTlive by double click.

Somehow some files are not deleted when deinstalling the app, I guess…

I’m at the end of my possibillties…maybe another idea…?

Would you like to do a remote session? - pm me…

Alls well that ends well:
In this case ver3 had been installed as well as v2, and then v2 was uninstalled. Windows registry still had links to v2 which was the issue. I manually deleted some of them and modified others to point to v3 which solved the problem.

Disclaimer: I don’t recommend anybody editing the registry unless they have a good idea of how it works. Always back it up before making changes.

Solution !!!

Clive went through my system by remote and deleted manually a few fragments of VST live 2 (and 1) . He went through the registry and other parts that I never knew…it was not done in a minute and I am VERY THANKFUL !!!

NOW it works like it should.

I recommend to deinstall VST live 2 before installing VST live 3

Dear Clive …once again THANK YOU SO MUCH !!! :victory_hand: :slightly_smiling_face: :victory_hand:
