I was wondering if Dorico could have a separate marker we could place in the score to indicate where we would like Dorico to start playing, rather than just “start of selection” There are cases where I’d like to hear before and after the selection to see how my changes are impacting the piece, and having a separate way to indicate that without impacting the score would be great.

Welcome to the forum, Steven. No, there’s nothing like that at present, but it’s something we may add in future. In the meantime, you might find it helpful to use Shift+Space to start playback: it restarts playback from the last place you started from.
