Hi, I’m nearing the end of my Dorico Pro 6 trial, and I see that there is a hefty discount (~$600) if you own Sibelius Ultimate. The annual price for Sibelius Ultimate is $208 CAD… Why would folks not purchase an annual license for Sibelius Ultimate just to get the discount? Am I missing something?
There are a variety of ways you can achieve a cheaper total price than the full “retail” price of Dorico Pro, with cross-grades, upgrades, etc.
I think you can get it slightly cheaper if you get the free SE, upgrade to Elements, and then upgrade to Pro.
The whole point of a cross-grade deal is to persuade you to try Dorico, hopefully like it, and then continue to purchase version upgrades over time.
If you didn’t save any money, then there wouldn’t be an incentive to try it.
Well, I crossed the divide into Dorico from Finale. It was a good decision. Out of an abundance of caution, I also purchased Sibelius Ultimate (previous version to what is current). I found Sibelius just a little too “Windows-sy” for this Mac user and even more cumbersome to produce my first complete work than with Dorico despite frustrations with both.
Once I really embraced Dorico, I could not imagine going over to Sibelius for a multitude of reasons. Sure, there’s a huge learning curve but it is not insurmountable. I learn new things every day. If you have used Sibelius before considering Dorico, I would just make a list of pros and cons for each and go with what makes you comfortable. Dorico may not be for everyone but I think it has a much brighter future than Sibelius and Musescore.
