On the surface it seems there is a fair amount of overlap between the kinds of things Steam Deck and MIDI Remote can do. For folks using both I wonder what tasks do you find are a better fit for one tool or the other & why?
Many implementations for the Stream Deck I know, already are based on the MIDI Remote, so I’m not sure, perhaps you’re referring to an older one?
Anyway, I don’t have a Stream Deck, but I do have a LoupeDeck, similar thing. I have a midi keyboard, acting as my main controller (a Novation SL MK3) which doesn’t have a jog wheel. I love jog wheels. So I got the LoupeDeck complimentary for the jog, and at the same time I’ve assigned some of my most used key commands to its buttons. The 6 knobs that it has, I’ve assigned to zoom in/out (h&v) nudging, things like that. Works fine though lately I turned to tablets (currently 3) for most of the things I need from a remote (and then some).
yes thats right, most things you can do with a streamdeck you could also do with midi Remote, but not vice versa. especially controlling plugin parameters is very nice with the midi remote.
on my midi remotes i have transport section setup, but also, fx sends
focus quick controls etc
however, on the streamdeck i´m using more project related tasks like
unmute all, unsolo all, show all automation lanes, open logical editor, triggering certain makros, disabling/enabling selected track.
i find having thumbnails on the streamdeck with all these function helps me using them inuitively
Does your Stream Deck have knobs?
Oh, I hadn’t picked up on that but it makes sense,
no, just the regular one with the buttons
