Question about Scoring Express

I’m finally finished all my old projects in Finale and am completely now in Dorico (which I’m loving). Was wondering about getting the scoring express templates. Is there any value in getting them if I already have a music font (MTF-Beethoven) that I like and a first page set-up that I want to keep? Are there spacing options, etc that I could still use, or at that point would I not really be using any of their features? Sorry if this is a dumb question, not really sure what all comes with the templates.

I bought those essentially as a support for something I found was needed, but maybe not for me…
If you feel comfortable enough with page template sets (especially building up both full scores and parts that work well together), it might be overkill… If you want to spare yourself the hassle of going through that and use some very elegant and working templates, go for it!

I have found them very useful.

When you use the templates for new pieces it works perfect. You can add, remove or change instruments and save the files as new project template to create your own templates based on the scoring express templates.

What is more complicated is if you already have a piece fully written and want to switch to a scoring express format. There are probably faster methods but I usually end up copying the existing score into an empty scoring express template with adapted identical instruments and instrument-order.

Missing are one or more full orchestra classical template sets.

I do File>Import>Flows from other Dorico files into the templates. It works very well.

You could use the library manager to import all the scoring express settings into your file. I don’t know if everything transfers right though, I did not test this. But it should work, as it is one purpose of the library manager after all.

Thanks Leigh_d that is definitely a faster solution than copy pasting.
If I now modify the Score Express Templates to use my usual VEPro based instrument setup that could be a great solution.

(Default for Scoring Express is a Noteperformer playback template but as I do not use Noteperformer, they kindly sent me a version with the Silence Dorico template instead)

Thanks Marc, I did experiment a bit with both the library manager and loading page template sets created from the Scoring Express templates but as you already feared something is always missing which then needs to be changed manually.

That’s the interesting bit: have ypu found out what it is that doesn’t transfer well?
