Question about volume fader in relation to plugins

Where is the volume slider in the signal chain? Does it go inserts, then the volume fader, then send, or insert, or fader, insert, send, etc?

The reason I’m asking is because I’m trying to conceptualize how the volume fader effects a compressor plugin, and vice versa. For instance, if I make a track louder with the fader, will that change the input level for the compressor? Or does the signal hit the compressor and then go the fader to be made louder? For the sake of simplicity, let’s assume in this example there are no other inserts and no sends.

The last two insert slots are post-fader. Meaning, the channel’s fader will affect the input level of the plug-in.

You’ll notice the first 6 inserts are in blue, the last 2 in orange .

I actually didn’t notice that at all. All 8 inserts look the same in Cubase Elements 6.

Ok, maybe there are no post-fader inserts in Cubase elements, although that would surprise me.

Take a look at p.133 of the Operation Manual PDF (English). There is a diagram of the signal path.
