The title is fairly self explanatory but I will add that having moved from a purely trackpad oriented input model with Finale to a mixed model with keyboard and trackpad in Dorico, I find that I often accidentally hit other keys during playback in Write Mode causing all kinds of interesting things. Undoubtedly the worst is unintentionally hitting the Delete key and losing several notes at and before the selected note for playback. Thank God for undelete!
(Macbook Pro with latest OS if that matters.). And, yes my hand is hovering over the keyboard continuously…
Some of us make small corrections even during playback. I’m sorry this feature gives you problems. I can appreciate how inadvertently changing or deleting notes can be a real problem.
Your argument is absolutely valid. But at the same time, I know that I’ve changed things a million times during playback, and am glad that I can. I’m a bit odd, though.
In fact, sometimes I even make it a game and try to make my changes before the playhead reaches them…
Interesting that this comes up as a negative. When I started using Dorico, this was one of the “features” I advertised to the Finale crowd. You can actually do stuff during playback! No more of the totally-frozen, locked up screen playback which I hated in Finale.
However, I totally can see why you’re not liking it. Maybe there should be an option to disable editing during playback.
@Derrek Thanks. Perhaps an option to allow/disallow editing during playback would be helpful? Maybe I’m the only one who does this…
@DanielMuzMurray Thanks. I found a couple blank measures on a collaborative project the other day and it took a while to recall and recreate what was missing. Maybe there could be an on/off option for this?
@Lavon I suppose that I use playback as a confirmation of sorts during notation and go back and edit after listening to a selection. Yes, options wouild be nice. I can see how it could be helpful to edit during playback.
As a temporary workaround (but it is useful in general as a good practice in Dorico) remember to deselect anything, after any editing operation, and before playback, so maybe typing inadvertitely will have less effect. I do not know if this makes any sense, I am not using Dorico so much because it is not good for me. I could make suggestions to the developers for any thread I read, but I am not paid, so they fix things by themselves LOL
Good point. Unfortunately, I use a selected note, rest or measure (excuse me, bar) to initiate playback in a selection.
Ah ah ah, so I am not wrong about the strange playback positioning system?
Now enthusiasts will describe how archaic is wanting a normal positioning system, bla bla…
I will add that I tend to use scrub playback to find little oddities that may need to be edited and general playback to hear the piece as a whole as well as its rhythmic structure overall.
Interestingly, in scrub playback, editing is impossible by design. It seems like the ability to edit should be in scrub playback while it should be enabled during regular playback…thoughts?
Maybe an option for both to allow/disallow editing during playback?
It’s not necessary to have an option. Today I am generous, so I make a suggestion: it is partially enough that when the playback starts, the program un-select all selected stuff to prevent unwanted editing…wait, maybe it is not possible because they put the selection changes in the undo memory too…So maybe yes, an option is really necessary for any oddity of the application.
Actually, I find that scrub playback is the one time that I’m likely to destroy my project.
Scrub playback does enter a “read-only” mode, but it is actually a continuous series of keypresses that repeat while you hold the key down. It is still possible, if you have a note selected to click while scrubbing and copy that note to wherever you clicked. (Alt- click).
“Dorico Hero,” perhaps.
Didn’t know you could edit during playback … not a problem, I’ll never use it. Two different kinds of thinking, ‘don’t cross the streams’ …
Since others like to edit during play and some of us do not, your response is not useful and neither is your narcissistic generosity. Thank you but no thanks!
This is strange forum. Reading the threads there are so many toxic comments, but everybody wants to create a case out of me, I am getting insults here, while being accused of being rude.
However I do not even understand what you mean.
My previous comment was clearly in the wake of yours, furthermore it is clearly humorous, unless there are people here that are “more equal” than others and have more liberty of language and expression.
If it is so, the rules are not fair here. From now on I too will report personal insults I receive without any reason that is not childish.
Well, it is difficult to understand and grasp humor in text on this forum much like when texting on a mobile phone or on social media. I do not know you nor your sense of humor. We all interpret as we “see” it. So, if your posts were in humor, I apologize. I would also suggest that you use some sort of parenthetical remark or emoji when being humorous so that the rest of us can better understand. I do my best (not always successful) to not use my sarcastic humor here on this forum as I initially offended some folks. You may wish to do the same. Kind regards.
