Questions About Dorico 6 and iPad Use

Hello, Dorico team!

I’m excited about the release of Dorico 6. The software is already amazing, but I’d like to know if there are plans to add some features that I consider important, such as:

  • PDF export with grid and combined parts
  • Batch export
  • Score-scrolling video export

These features are available in competing software, but I’d love to keep using Dorico because of how easy it is to create beautiful scores. Are these features considered relevant for future updates?

Additionally, I use an iPad for my piano lessons and often create scores with my students, including children. I currently use Notion because I can write with the Apple Pencil, which is more practical during lessons with the iPad on the piano stand.

With the release of Dorico 6, will the iPad app also be updated? Is there a possibility of implementing support for writing with the Apple Pencil? I’d love to know because if that’s the case, I plan to take advantage of the current 40% discount.

By the way, I recently purchased StaffPad, but I haven’t gotten used to it yet. Dorico would be the best option for me since I already use it on my MacBook.

Thank you in advance for your attention and for the excellent work!

Steinberg Dorico team do not tell us what will be in any update until it is released. There will be updates for the iPad version with v6.

I use StaffPad, I love it for a specific purpose (writing notes with the Pencil the olde way, then export the stems to Nuendo, or Logic). Sometimes I export the xml to Dorico.
I would use Dorico for printed notation.

Can you explain “PDF export with grid”? Do you mean an actual grid on the page of the PDF?

You can be pretty sure that everything that gets asked for will be considered by the team, at least. However, there is a very large list…!

Hold on, wait a sec, did I miss something? Or is this just generally referring to an upcoming release that we all know will happen at some time but has not been confirmed yet? Please do think of all the over-40s here and their heart conditions!

A new release was mentioned here for this year 2025 (near the bottom).

We never normally know anything about it including when and what is in it, until it happens.

(then in a year or two will be Dorico 7)

We haven’t even gotten to a 5.5 yet…

I understand. Thank you for your message. But sometimes they at least mention whether something is planned or not, right? When I first bought Dorico 5 Pro, I asked a similar question, and the feedback was that they do plan to implement it, but not in the near future. Maybe now someone can say if it’s getting closer.

I bought StaffPad, but shortly after, I went on vacation from teaching and couldn’t use it. Actually, I tried it a bit, but I didn’t find it easy to use. I’m already quite familiar with Dorico, so if they added the possibility of handwriting input, it would be great.

I know that entering notes with the Apple Pencil isn’t the most efficient way, but for my use—in lessons—it would be better. I imagine many people would appreciate this feature, especially musicians or students who use the software more casually, not just professional copyists.

Calm down! I’m talking about a future release. I thought Dorico 6 was closer to being launched than not. I saw something about it recently, suggesting that the promotional material might already be ready.

I meant the Full Score along with individual parts in a single PDF. I can do this on my Mac with one click, and it only takes a few seconds, but since I do it so often, it bothers me. Other software already has this feature, so it shouldn’t be unreasonable to ask for it. But it’s okay, I won’t die if it’s not done urgently. As you said, there’s a long list of requests.

I thought version 6 was very close. Could it not be?

Other software is other software, but you are welcome to ask and are not alone doing so.

Glad to hear: staying alive definitely increases your chance of see the feature appear.
