Real time note entry not synced w/Dorico 5 Pro

I hooked up my Korg Triton synth via midi converted to USB. I am able to do note entry from the Triton, but the sound when played and the notes when transcribed are not in sync. I’ve tried making changes to the buffer, etc., and nothing makes it work. The notes are input as the correct pitches, but they are 1/2 beat behind the realtime, which makes the notes tie across bar lines, incorrect note values, etc. Probably a basic fix that has been posted a 100 xs, but I couldn’t find a solution. Anyone that can help me? I tried to do a Chat with Steinberg, but waited 25 mins and no response :frowning:

Hi @jbare12 , and welcome to the Forum.

you may want to change the MIDI input latency compensation that you find in Preferences/Play.

In the linked Manual you find suggestions on how to set it.
I have set mine to 55ms, and the recording synch works perfectly with my KORG microKEY, for example.

Is a little trial and error, at the beginning: set one value, and record a simple rhythm of one bar quarter notes, one bar eight notes, one bar sixteenth, so you can see how the setting reacts, and correct it appropriately, till you have a satisfactory result.

Excerpt:

I’ve made several changes and none of them affect the latency issue. Changed the buffer, same result. I used to use Finale many years ago, but upgraded to Doric Pro 5 when Finale sent their sunset notice for that software. Really frustrating - spent 1.5 last night and all my realtime entries were a royal mess. Merely 1/8th, 1/4, 1/2 notes, and dotted 1/2 notes. Another suggestion?

It may take some time (an patience and observing what the result each time is, after changing slightly the amount of ms) to find the correct MIDI latency compensation value. Try with big numbers first, also negative values, and it should definitely have an impact on the recording. Then refine from there.

Also: I suggest to set your quantisation settings to something simple like this, during your initial tests:

And set a low buffer in menu Edit/Device Setup/Device Control Panel , I have mine set to 128 for example.

Thank you for all your help and responses - and quick ones to boot! I only seem to have a buffer value of 10 - 100. My menu in the Device Control Panel didn’t look anything like the example I saw online. I’m using Win 11, PC, Korg Triton keyboard.

I literally made subtle changes and tested after each change to latency and buffer and when I record, the playback is behind my touch. So, everything is a 1/2 beat behind. Is there any type of global highlight and instruct the entry to remove the first 1/8 rest?

I have my quantisation set to the 1/8 note, since I am merely entering a hymn so I can transpose to other keys much easier.

Select the rest.
Turn on Insert mode.
Press Delete.
Turn off Insert mode.

@jbare12, you didn’t click on the link in my first post: but probably because you already read that Manual page?

And from your values I am not sure what you are looking at (or maybe I am ignoring how the settings are on Windows…)

  • The MIDI latency compensation in the Dorico Preferences can be set between -1000ms and +1000ms (ms=milliseconds)

  • The buffer sizes of the Audio device are normally multiple of 32 (samples):
