Record midi with korg kronos and cubase

I’m writing to see if anyone has managed to solve the problem I’m having: I have a Korg Kronos, which I connected to Cubase and can record audio tracks. Unfortunately, the problem is the MIDI part; I haven’t been able to record MIDI tracks with sounds from the Korg library using the Kronos VST that I can’t interface with Cubase. I can record MIDI, but I can’t hear any sound. I know the connection to the ASIO driver is missing (according to what some have said). Has anyone managed to resolve this issue using other strategies or VSTs adapted to the Korg? Thanks for any replies to this problem.

Hi, @Giovanni_Pastorino

Could you give us more details, both audio and MIDI related ? I ask this because there is an USB connector on your device.

When performing or playing back ? Beside this, how do you get sound from your setup (audio interface…) ?

es, the Kronos has a USB connector and its own interface (to be used as a sound card)
but in the Windows operating system this interface does not work (or rather it only works in
32 bit) and in any case it does not communicate with the ASIO driver.
I also connected the MIDI cable in and out of my sound card, but even though it detects the MIDI
signal in and out, I can record but I can’t hear the sound (again due to the problem with the VST that doesn’t recognize the ASIO driver). I would like to listen to the sound of the
Kronos banks I purchased and be able to modify them.

Performance and playback.
I have a Native Instrument Komplete Audio sound card that works great with Studio One, Band in a Box, and Ableton.

With Cubase, you won’t be able to use a plug-in in 32 bits format, unless you use a more or less reliable workaround such as jBridge. OTOH, it seems that there is a stand-alone version of the editor : I guess that both have the same features, as they are presented in the same way in the relevent page of the Korg official site.

I haven’t looked closely at the Kronos manual, but I guess that there is a way to avoid using the editor in its plug-in version. Beside this, I would temporarily drop the USB connector usage (at least, for troubleshooting purposes) and use both MIDI and jack cables to see how Cubase behave, if you can.

The audio connection works perfectly and I can record audio tracks.
As for the MIDI tracks, the track is recorded but without sound. I'd like to use the Kronos sounds in the MIDI track, but I can't because the MIDI receives the signal and writes it, but I don't have the Korg Kronos sound. I saw that there's a Midi Quest software that could (perhaps) solve the problem, but it's exorbitantly expensive and I'd like to be able to record the MIDI with the Korg Kronos sounds directly into Cubase in the Windows version (it works perfectly on Mac).

There are several things to check, when dealing with external instruments :

  • the MIDI output port
  • the MIDI channels used
  • the MIDI out activity displayed in Cubase transport meters
  • the setup of the Kronos device : is the Local parameter set to Off and more generally, are you sure of your MIDI receive settings ?
  • the audio configuration of your setup : there should be an audio track in your Cubase project with Monitor set to On and with its Input Routing set to be able to receive the incoming audio signals coming from the Kronos device. Reminder : you CANNOT record audio data in a MIDI/Instrument track.
  • the input audio activity in Cubase

If you have time, I would like you to post screenshots of :

  • The MIDI track involved, with its inspector opened and the Output Routing setting visible,
  • Same for the audio track, but with its Input Routing visible,
  • the Studio > Studio setup > MIDI Port Setup panel,
  • the Studio > Audio Connections > Inputs one.
