Record problems with Yamaha DGX-305

It has several controls in the menu. With local control on, I can hear it, with local control off, I can’t. Then there is keyboard out.
When I first started to write this, the main problem was that I was only getting a signal with local control off, but then I couldn’t hear what I was playing. but I did step entry for several measures and was able to play it back. Then I went to check something regarding the situation, and now with local control on, I am still getting a signal but can also hear it.

But as I wanted to record more, I get a note playing at the beginning of the measure, where there is no note. It is a stuck note but if I reset it, the sound returns when the measure starts again. If the measure is not looped, it plays wherever I am at the beginning of a measure and stops about halfway through. If I take the monitor button off, then it doesn’t sound but then I get no signal when I play a note on the keyboard.

So with no loop, I find I can record in the measures after the sound dies out.

When recording or using the MIDI/sequencer functions on a Yamaha DGX-305, issues such as note cutoffs, MIDI echo/feedback loops, or data truncation—where sustained key presses are registered as very short notes—often occur. Leaving “Local Control” enabled while routing MIDI through digital audio workstation (DAW) software creates a MIDI echo loop that interrupts notes or triggers brief double signals.

To prevent feedback loops when recording into computer software, disable Local Control in the keyboard’s Utility/Function menu. Additionally, verify that the keyboard synchronization setting (or clock source) is correctly configured and matches your recording software.

Thanks for your insight, I hadn’t set the clock to synchronize, as I was doing step entry and didn’t think it was relevant, but now I set that too.

the problem for me with local control off is that I hear no notes being played. Although the input of the track is set to the 305 or to all inputs, the track registrs the input, but I hear nothing that I play, only other soloed tracks. Is it relevant to the 2 inputs and outputs shown?

Have you enabled MIDI Thru in Cubase under Edit > Preferences > MIDI?

The midi out for the track is set to the Proteus 2k so that’s what you would hear with local off…but I’m guessing that’s not turned on or not connected/routed anywhere

local on/off won’t affect whether midi is sent or not, only whether the sounds are played directly from the keyboard. Local on and recording/playing from the same unit can be problematic because you play the note which then plays back from cubase a split second later. So options are use local on and disable midi thru or use local off and set the track out to the correct unit. (but you will have some latency this way)

If the track output is set to either of my external synths, p2K, Akai z8, or Tx81z, I hear nothing when I play the 305 keys, though the track gets a signal and records. the same tracks all produce sound when the midi on then is played back.

If I try to record into a Halion sonic 7 instrument track, then I get no signal and can’t proceed.
Would it have anything to do with setting up the 305 as a remote device?

In that case you should probably confirm if midi thru is enabled as Alfo suggested earlier.

So those are the sounds you want to hear…not something on the 305??

Searching the manual for all midi references, midi through is not mentioned. In the implementation chart at the back, I noticed it mentions omni, mono and poly modes, but these aren’t in the index of the manual, and no info about them there, just a footnote.

Meanwhile, even with local control off, so I can’t hear the keys played, when I set to record, I still hear the drone in the 1st measure though there are no notes present there nor extending into it.

Alfo already told you exactly where to set midi thru. It’s in Cubase, not in your keyboard!

Somehow, I missed that short reply amongst the longer ones! Midi through was off in preferences and I turned on and can now hear the keyboard play, though its volume knob is all the way down, and changing the channel, now I hear strings- excellent. Though I still have that drone in the first measure of playing.

Great… With the drone are you sure there isn’t a note overlapping the start point you’re trying to record from?

Regarding the drone: Please check the Project window or Key Editor to see if there is a note in the first bar (or before the start at bar 1) that is too long or does not end. Often, a sustain command (CC 64) or a modulation source is holding the note. Open the track’s controller lane and delete the command at the beginning, if present. You should also check the volume or filter automation in the first bar in case a value is set to maximum.

This is so strange. Even if I am beyond all music and start as though to record, the sound comes on. I squeezed the tracks so all may be seen. Despite the drone, I recorded silmutaneoulsy on MELODY and solo tracks, which are extended out beyond everything except bubble track, which I used to play along with. I would loop a short section to play an idea till I had it well and then record, despite the droning (which doesn’t record.)

So if either of those tracks has solo on I will hear either a piano or string drone, depending on which, and this is even if I start to record at M56 or beyond where there is no music at all. But I can still record with no drone if both are muted, I just wouldn’t hear the previous measure to relate to. Playing with the loop causes the drone to refresh each time it starts over. With a longer loop, it dies out.

now I discovered that in this mode, I hear no notes below G below middle C, whether triggering the halion or the Z8. Have to return to local control to get those.

But even then the Halion continues lower, while the intenal piano sound still doesn’t go beyond that G. How weird.
