Recording from cursor

If I place the cursor on beat 3 of the bar and press record, it jumps back to beat 1 and starts recording. I found a post from back in Mar 2018 that stated the count-in needs to be turned off. This is very aggravating! Obviously, we need a count-in to know when to start playing. There are times when using punch-in record is necessary, but simply wanting to start recording on beats other than 1 isn’t one of them. Surely there’s another way besides turning the count-in off. And this is Cubase 15 for crying out loud!

Hi, @jpbanks

Have you checked the Transport > Common Record Modes setting ? I ask this, because the only way to reproduce the behavior you reported is to have this setting as Start Recording at LeftLocator/Punch-in Position, and maybe your left locator is at bar 1…

Yes, I use “Re-Record” and “Start Recording at Project Cursor” is checked. It will only start recording at the project cursor when the count-in is unchecked.

Ok, I see the problem, now. I’ve been testing it with an audio source, and on my end, the behavior isn’t the same with a MIDI one, when the count-in is activated. I have no immediate explanation, I admit…

When Count-In is enabled, the recording starts at the beginning of the bar because count-in is measured in “number of bars” in the metronome setup.

It would be really nice if Cubase had a feature to auto-adjust the count-in to play pickup beats for partial measures–but since it doesn’t, starting recording on beats other than 1 with count-in is a situation where using punch-in is useful.

You could make a feature request for a beat-based count-in :+1:
