Regarding Nuendo 15 and the future direction of Nuendo

I always saw media as a combination of video+dialog+music+sfx and foley…just a dream of mine to eliminate the project format wars

I thought that as well, until a Nuendo guy put it to me, that the more you add the harder it gets to manage the application, from a development perspective.

With that said, I crossgraded from Cubase to Nuendo for some post features, namely the ability to post words on a video screen, which I will eventually need to prompt singers, however being able to throw a video into a Cubase or Nuendo project and watch it, doesn’t really cut it, if you want to include media facilities beyond audio, MIDI and effects, let alone the whole “sphere” of immersive audio.

I would like to be able to arrange still images onto a timeline before we talk about rendering anything. Even just as the .mp4 specification, finally includes PCM audio, nowhere is it implemented, not even in a browser and there are no container editing apps that will support this scenario so while FLAC is supported, it isn’t broadcast quality.

I’m 100% with you. I’m not into post-production but I use Nuendo for immersive music production (as it has more functionalities then Cubase Pro in this perspective). I even promote Nuendo extensively in the book I’ve written on this subject (‘Stereo Was A Nice Try’) and use it as my central DAW for immersive.

I hope Steinberg will pick up the (urgent) immersive issues in the next update, because I have the feeling the attention for immersive is slowing down the last two updates. Nuendo was a the forefront, but others have catched up and do even better. It’s not only Ambisonics, it’s also about adjustable channel width, freely assignable channel width for group folders, making the VST Multipanner and Renderer controlable with Midi Remote, be able to make re-renders from the Renderer, opening for other formats like Eclipsa, multi-mono plugins, etc.

I really hope the focus is not only on post-production, but also on immersive music production. If I can help, be my guest.

Thanx for your comment.

I think that much more people (especially with top level background) are needed to convince Steinberg about the importance of this topic.

I do understand the needs of other people, too, but as I’m working on immersive only, this is the base of my work. I thought Nuendo was the right choice, waiting year on year (during learning immersive audio with all its aspects) for the right updates… But the more I know, the farer I go, the larger the problems become…

I wonder, how many Nuendo users (in the professional entertainment world) are using Immersive Audio, and in which way. Seems that they are happy with 3OA (or standard audio formats like ATMOS, etc.) and have no issues…

This is a great conversation, and I appreciate everyone talking calmly and respectfully about it. I’m a composer and sound designer, so I’m coming from that perspective when I say the following:

For me, the main issue that Nuendo faces is workflow. I’ve been auditioning both Reaper and Studio Pro because of longstanding and new issues with workflow in Nuendo, and it’s been an interesting experience. There are pros and cons to both vs. Nuendo (again, this is from a composer /sound designer standpoint), but the main pro is workflow. They both have certain ways of working that are overall more intuitive and faster than Nuendo. The list would be far too long to go into, but it’s often that sometimes features get broken when new ones are introduced, new features remain unfinished in certain ways, and old legacy features are holdovers from the days where click-click-click-click was the way most DAWs worked. I would be happy to list them all out if someone from Steinberg is truly interested in attacking this aspect.

Studio Pro and Reaper are not as deep as Nuendo, so I’m still with Nuendo. But it’s tempting to switch because of the workflow thing, and it could definitely happen with newer versions of either. I don’t want that…I want to stay with what I’ve known and loved for many years, with updating features being focused on speed and intuitiveness.

Also, speed and smoothness. In both Studio Pro and Reaper, drag and dropping from external sources and a lot of internal navigation and scrolling somehow feel smoother and faster in many cases…I can’t fully describe it, but it’s palpable.

A firm focus on going through the entire program and tying up these workflow and speed/smoothness issues one-by-one would make for a significant difference in the workflow experience of Nuendo. The things that Steinberg has done for that more recently are wonderful and appreciated, and they just need to go much deeper.

I completely understand that people have different needs in Nuendo, but I’m confident when I say that every user would benefit from what I’m talking about.

I am interested in Bezier Curves for tempo, but I won’t change DAW because of that since I am not keen on using the MIDI editors in those programs and there is no Drum Map so I am hopeful Steinberg will implement Bezier Curves in the Tempo Track at some point.

True. But their GUI is horrible! Fairlight’s workflow was much better! BMD should’ve blended into Fairlight, instead of just attaching it to Resolve.

At the very least, SB could finally switch over to the universal standard for immersive monitoring! This nonsense between the side and rear monitors is maddening!

Workflow is highly personal. Some people will prefer this and some people will prefer that. Our brains are all different, and they adapt to different things, and to add to that, neither of us are using any program as complex as a DAW in the exact same way.

Very true. That’s why I wrote “for me”. I’ve been using Cubase/Nuendo for about 22 years and have mostly loved the workflow but some things get broken, some are inconsistent, some are needlessly click-click-click fiddly, and many of them aren’t fixable with PLE/LE but are GUI and/or design-based.

I would venture to say that most, if not all, people prefer clicking less to clicking more. I could be oddly wrong about that, though!

Point taken, however with more functions comes the need to conceal some of those functions behind a dialog.

Agreed, yes. I’m referring more to click-click-click issues that have been around for many years, or in certain cases intuitive ways to do things that have been broken due to new features. And things that slow workflow down like certain scrolling issues on Mac (which has been going on for many years and does not exist in any other DAW I’ve tried). I feel going through the entire program for one entire revision cycle and strongly addressing all of those things would be a great thing to do. I understand that it wouldn’t work as well for marketing, unfortunately.

I was just going to make a suggestion in that regard, since now we have the bug thread(s), so why not have something in the area of workflow optimisation, notwithstanding regression.

:ok_hand:good idea! :smiling_face_with_sunglasses::musical_notes:

Great idea! I’d do it myself, but I’m bad at formatting posts like that, haha

I’d pay for an entire new license if they woul take a major update and just resolve all standing bugs and workflow issues. No new features, just fixing stuff.

Absolutely 100% agree.

Same here, 100%!

I’d like to see it, not become a flame post.

For me the biggest win would be a proper scripting API like Reaper has. I’m in a less common position with Nuendo as I’ve not only been using it since v1 but I do composition, sound design and post production (including immersive) with it for games and occasionally film.

I fully agree that everyone has their own workflow preferences AND less clicking is better.

My two most important requests are:

  1. Allow midi remote control of EVERY function and setting. Right now many important ones are missing
  2. Give us a scripting API like Reaper.

The vast majority of people in games are now using Reaper because of the scripting and it’s accelerating because now Claude can write you a script in seconds that does exactly what you want and you build your perfect workflow quickly and easily.

I do NOT want to switch to Reaper. I love Cubendo and I know the team works hard balancing all the requests but these two things would allow USERS to create so many of the features and workflows we’ve been asking for (for decades in some cases) and would win back a lot of converts.
