Does anyone know if in Elements there is a way to have the rehearsal letter suffix unboxed (while the letter itself is boxed)? Some internet solutions seem to suggest the properties of the suffix are editable, but I can’t see those options. Does that mean it’s a pro thing?
I don’t think it’s possible to have a rehearsal mark suffix be independent of the rehearsal mark’s enclosure, regardless of Dorico version.
What are you trying to notate? If you want to denote sections, like “Verse” and “Chorus”, you could use system-attached text whose position you can tweak in Engrave mode.
The only way I’ve found to do this (keeping all text together) is to make it system text and use one character style for the boxed text (there are several font options out there) and another style for the unboxed suffix. It works well enough.
Ok, I will try that. Using a separate text object for the suffix is a formatting nightmare i.e. individually placing each suffix on each part.
I meant individually tweaking the position of each suffix on each part, as it invariably doesn’t line up somehow.
Hi Dan, I’m trying to do this and not having luck. Are you saying that you are mixing boxed text and unboxed text in a single text object? I can’t see a way to do that- I add a border in the properties panel and it boxes the whole text. ?
No, use a font that actually includes bordered letters.
Ok, I am getting closer, thanks to your help. Got MusGlyphs going, so that solves that. Next problem though- getting the Boxed letter to sit squarely above the barline. It defaults 4 spaces (I think that’s the term?) to the right of the barline. Yes, I can manually move it over in engrave, but that means I have to manually move it over for each letter for each part, for each score I am creating, which is some 30 scores. a gigantic amount of work. And yet, if it isn’t over the barline just so it just doesn’t look right. Suggestions anyone? and thanks for all the help!
Brilliant! That ALMOST does it. But, next problem. when I am making the custom “offset” paragraph style, I have to choose a font. If I choose MusGlyphs, the suffix of my existing text gets changed to music symbol gobbledygook, not letters. If I set it as Academico, the MusGlyphs magic boxed is removed. I’m missing something. My steps so far are: shift x to create text- type “[A] Intro”- don’t leave text entry field, but highlight “[A]” and change the font to MusGlyphs. Right so far? Then how would I apply the offset paragraph style without messing up the font settings?
Set your paragraph style (custom, whatever name) to Academico with the offset. Then create a character style for MusGlyphs, and apply that character style to the first couple characters.
Slightly tedious, but it works. At least I think it works… I haven’t tried this exact scenario, but that’s how character styles work.

Almost. The style “MusGlyphs” should be a character style, not a paragraph style. Paragraph styles apply to an entire paragraph, whereas character styles apply only to selected text.
