I am very new to Dorico and am running the 5 Pro edition. This is one of my first projects after transitioning from Finale. I am doing a short piece with only 12 measures for 6 horns and rhythm section. The short piece is in 4/4 and begins with a 1 beat pickup measure. When I get to the end of the piece, there is a 3-beat bar and my “end” bar line. Right after that is another 4/4 time signature and a measure with one beat (quarter rest) in it. I have tried every way I could find, online, to get rid of that pickup measure at the end of my score. It is still there.
Just wondering if I might have selected the incorrect ending bar line. In Finale it was the bar system that had a thin line and a very thick line. Of course, this extracts in all of my parts! I have this one short measure, all by itself at the end.
Thanks for some suggestions! Appreciate your helping a former Finale user.
Dont worry about how your ending turned out after the xml import.
Select the rest on beat 4 after your very last note.
Insert the final bar line (I do this with Shift-B, typing “final” and hitting Enter).
In the System Track select the hanging over bars and delete.
I am sending a screen shot of the mess I am dealing with. Here is what I want to do to end this short score. I need to add one measure of 3/4 (bar 12) with an ending double bar. I need to get rid of the bar over on page three. It has a bar one on it for some reason and is not in the Key of Db like the prior 11 bars.
Sorry, but I new to Dorico, coming over from Finale 27. Thanks for your help, as always!
The bar on page 3 looks like a new flow. Go to Setup and see if there’s an unnecessary flow at the bottom of the window. To delete it, click on the unwanted flow and click on the trash can icon.
After deleting the extraneous flow, select the last barline on the previous page and type Shift+B1 to add one more bar. Enter your notes as needed; there will be a rest at the end on beat four. Select that rest and go to Edit/Remove Rest.
Thanks to dwlarson and others I finally was able to get this finished, with help and suggestions from all of you. People were over on the Finale Forum who really helped me back in the mid-1990’s when I was a newbie over there.
Thanks all of you for sharing your time with those with issues. I discovered another little issue I will need to solve. I do a lot of big band prep work and will need to move my articulations to “above” every note, no matter where it is on the staff. Dorico does it by the “classical” rules. How do I set it to put articulations above EVERY note?
I would highly recommend you take some time to thoroughly explore the Engraving Options, Notation Options, and Layout Options: there are a LOT of nitpicky settings and it’s best to tweak them to your desired output and save those as your defaults so that you don’t have to recreate them for every new project.
Sorry for jumping in, but it might be necessary for a “beginner” (long year finale user) to know this:
you actually don’t need to create an empty bar (measure) to fill it with music. Those will be created while you keep on inputting music.
instead of obscuring (removing) rests, it is better to place the final bar-line where you
need it. And delete the extending bar by using the System Track or by “Trim Flow” command.
