Removing unwanted ties

Hi.

I have no clue how to search for an answer in text, but asking a question with images makes it an easy question.

Dorico is displaying the rhythm like this:

The beamed Bb should be just a single 8th note.

How can I accomplish this?

Thanks in advance!

  • Remove the ties by selecting both tie expressions and press u
  • Select the (first) B♭ and press o5 (o enables force duration)
  • Select the (first) E and press o55
  • Keep selecting the E and right-click > Beaming > Split Beam

I’d like to mention that this rhythm notation in a 3/4 is pretty hard to decipher.

Thanks that abracadabra did the trik!

(Its Argentinian folklore, it mixes 3/4, 6/8 and 4/4 in voices)

Dorico is simply trying to apply its notation rules for 3/4 bars by clearly identifying where each of the beats fall, hence it creates the ties across the beat boundaries.

You either need to force duration, or get Dorico to apply different rules by using a hidden time signature.

What you are actually asking for here is the notation for a 12/16 bar, beamed as 6+6 (which you could enter as shift-M [6+6]/16). You can hide this using the properties panel.

You can choose which route to go, but it likely depends on what is happening in other parts at the same time.

The natives likely can handle it, but the foreigners could run into reading problems.

For a bar like this, if the prevailing time signature is 3/4, I would insert a hidden 6/8 time signature. It would get you the beaming you want right away.
