Rename Plug-ins

Apparently, we won’t have this feature in Cubase 15 either. Perhaps it wasn’t mentioned enough in the surveys? It’s a shame because I think it could be one of those little things that would make a difference to the way we work in the mixer.

Feature requests need to be ten years old before being considered. Only three more years.

Someone likes to spread optimism, huh  ?

Need this!

In Cakewalk you have a “sort by category” option where you can have the plugin appear in one or multiple categories by tags. You can create those tags on the fly via drop down menu (no need to open the plugin manager), add multiple tags to multiple plugins in one go and other things. And you can rename plugins as well.

Just for the fun of it keeping the sarcasm for a little bit more: to emphasize it’s being considered in three years - not implemented yet.

Is this implemented on Cubase 15? I have not found a reason to upgrade jet.

no, not yet

I think 10 years is the minimum for basic feature requests here. ;-p

Yay! VU meters next year - Cubase 17?

I thought this was only Ableton lore since they implement one user suggested feature every 10 years.

Why is there a greyed out rename option?

That’s just cruel. Steinberg wants you to know what you don’t have…

Nah, you should have mentionend that this is a screenshot from the Plugin-Manager. These options pop up if you click on an item in a collection. You can rename folders but no individual plugins.

VERY good question - maye a plan since Cubase version ??.?

It’s the re-name folder option. Nothing to do with re-naming plugins.

Genuine question..can VST plugins be renamed in other DAWs?

I modified the plugin manager’s .xml file. Worked like a charm.

OK, then they could make it possible

Changes the plugin names in the list/manager… but not in the insert slots after loading (not the last time I tried this - admittedly a while ago).

Has this changed?

Seems to work for me. Cubase 15 Pro.

Here’s some proof with stock plugins.

I think my Groove Agent used to be called Groove Agent 6 SE. I shortened up some names and got rid of things like x64, and company names. Made the names nicer.

The effects:

The VST Connect names are shortened.

Don’t know what I did different. Or if rescanning with the plugin manager resets it or not, but it doesn’t look like it does.

So I went to:
C:\Users\(me)\AppData\Roaming\Steinberg\Cubase 15_64\

If you copy/paste that path, replace the user name with yours.
And opened PluginManager.xml , with whatever app you use to modify .xml files. I use VSCodium.

If someone modifies anything other than the names, keeping the quotes intact, I can’t be responsible for what happens.

This will only work for the name in the plugin manager. If you then insert the renamed plugin in an insert slot, the original name from the plugin will be used. If you want to change that, you need to change the name in the vst3plugins.xml. This has some drawbacks, though (apart from fiddling in an xml file), mainly that it is rather volatile and will be overwritten by Cubase if the plugin will be re-scanned.
