I saw some VERY complicated threads where it seemed that a lot of people got very confused about this and offered solutions that, in my opinion, are not practical, so I hope this doesn’t turnbturn into that, but, how do I change the name of a Project in Cubase?
All of my songs have their own folders, so, in theory, I should be able to change the Song Folder name if I wanted, as well as the .cpr file name from the Mac Finder and all should be totally fine, right? I think you can right click a project name and choose rename and all is well, correct?
I strongly recommend you do it via “File | Backup Project” but read the documentation first, as well as understanding file management on your computer.

From my experience on PC it is very easy.
With Cubase closed, if you rename a song file, it just loads with its new name.
If you rename a song folder and open the song file within, it will change the folder location info within the project, you can check in the Project Menu, Project Setup Window.
Having one separate folder for each song is indeed good practise !
And if in case you want to tidy things up because you made a new version of a song or something, then you can use the backup function to recreate a new folder structure.
Yes it does and that is indeed heplful to have a backup.
And you can always use the Pool to clean up unused files when needed.
It is all just basic task keeping, Cubase is well programmed for that in my opinion.
Got ya! So, in your experience, renaming these things is totally fine? I do this in Pro Tools and there’s no issues, so I wanted to ask about Cubase. I assume it should be fine since you can probably drag and drop a project onto another drive and just get to work, so I assume it would be no different as long as your songs have a folder hierarchy where all of the audio goes into the song folder?
I am dead serious. Instead of spending time asking you could have already tried it yourself.
Start with one single project. If it doesn’t go well, rename the file and folder back to their previous names.

Got ya! I love the idea of a backup session and know that’s smart practice for sure, but to double the space on your SSD just to rename the song? That seems excessive for that function. I assume renaming like you said shouldn’t be an issue as long as the folder hierarchies are all the same? There’s even a right click “rename” for the .cpr file, so surely this is a feature just for that?
You seem confused.
If you just rename, there is no doubling of space.
If you want to backup a folder by hand to have a safe copy, then yes there is doubling, basic computer usage.
If you want to use the Cubase backup function because you made internal changes into a song and want to leave one copy where it is and take the new version into a new folder, then also a doubling but as I said you can also then use the Pool to clean up the new version after backing.

I don’t believe I am… You had mentioned the idea of backing up a session, so I was just saying that that would double the size when all I wanted to do was rename it But perhaps I’m confusing something here.
This makes sense. I thought I would ask clarification on the matter in the forums since there has been conflicting information about it. When you replied, I think I mistook your reply of “good luck” as in it’s a wild card which made wanting to try it even more unclear.
If all of a project’s assets are in the top level project folder, with audio files in the Audio folder, I can move that folder anywhere (OS restrictions apply), rename the folder and/or rename the *.cpr file, save multiple versions of that project in the project folder, and each project will opens with no issues of any sort. None.
I backup by deleting unused audio files, deleting *.bak files, and then just dragging the whole folder to my external backups drive. Takes about a minute.

I saw that! I assume that was created for that purpose exactly, so that’s why I’m kind of surprised to see so many other suggestions across different threads which made me a little hesitant to do that.
