Repeat structures in Dorico (segnos, codas, etc ...)

Hi all. In the short time i’ve been using Dorico my biggest problem has been repeat structures. I arrange long musical dance arrangements for dance choreography’s of 8-10 mins in length. Throughout the arrangement i need to be able to use Segnos, Coda’s etc to minimize the length (in pages) of an arrangement. I previously used Sibelius and never had an issue with it.

I’ve learned to use the D.S. and marker index to achieve what i need. But the big question is what do i do when i’ve used up the 3 available ?! And why exactly are there only 3 available ? Why can’t it be infinite ?

Please, if there is another way of doing this that i’m not aware of (without writing out entire sections) i would really appreciate the help.

I’ve attached my Dorico file here for you too see and understand what i’m talking about. As you will see i’ve used up the 3 available marker indexes by the second page, however i have three more! Not being able to do this completely renders my playback useless.

Any help would be so greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Off the top of my head, the best way would be to split the work into Flows. In the following edit, I split the Flow after the 3rd Coda. I then hid the Flow Titles.

Really appreciate the help however even with it split in flows, it is still not playing back the correct repeats and D.S and Coda jumps. I’m not sure why.

For instance in the first song (bar 1 - 27) … it returns to Segno 1, and at the DS al Coda i have “replay repeats” ticked off in the properties, but it doesn’t do the repeat ?

Next section (42 - 81), it does not jump to Coda 2 ? Same with the next section (82 - 117). Does not jump to Coda.

But it does look like splitting it into different flows helped with adding more DS and Coda’s and i thank you very much for this!

Also, i have two sections where i have (1X senza repetizione), so the first time played, those two sections are done without repeat. To musicians that would be clear, is there any way to achieve playback for this ?

Thank you!

For your senza repetizione, can you suppress playback (Properties) on the repeat sign or repeat ending for the first time through? I can apply the suppress playback to the repeat sign, but I cannot get playback to start on the note I want by selecting it and pressing P. I don’t have time to listen to it from the beginning.

How exactly did you split my work into a second flow ?

Write>Split flow
(it’s right down the bottom of a long menu, so easy to forget!

Another way to do so is by using the Jump Bar. Press “J” at the location where you want to split the flow and simply type in “split flow.” You can also create a shortcut (such as sf) in the Jump Bar by typing in “split flow=sf” and then pressing Enter. Once you do so, you can type it in the Jump Bar whenever you want to split a flow.
