Repeats, correct procedure, Dorico 5

Repeats question, if I may, please:

I really want the first ending to play from the start of bar 21. But if I put (or drag) the Segno inside the repeat - say to the first note (not shown in this extract grab) of bar 21, Dorico jumps all the way back to the very beginning (Bar 1) of the Flow.

Secondly, do I actually need a ‘Fine’: if so where? I’d have thought at barline 28. But that too seems to mess up which repeat plays when… if at all.

Maybe a fluke: is there a known issue (Dorico 5.1.81.2225 on 15.4.1) with improperly-formed Repeats (like these of mine here) where the Cmnd + G shortcut does display the dialogue box, but fails actually to jump to the bar I want when clicking ‘OK’?

It’s only 4 bars - I think it would be clearer just to write it out linearly.

Unless I’ve misunderstood! I’m not completely sure what you want to happen.

Thanks, Richard!

Yes, not only is it merely four bars, but the changes are minimal!

However, as a self-taught amateur, I want to learn techniques with which I’m not familiar; in this case:

  1. first time: play bars 1 to 24, including bars 21, 22, 23, 24
  2. optionally jump back to bar 20, then
  3. second time play bars 25 to 28 - which, as you say, really aren’t very different from the first ending - but in other compositions they could be
  4. carry on from bar 29

IOW I’m using this really to get to grips with branching in a score in order to allow myself alternative passages.

DS al Fine will jump back to the segno, then carry on until it reaches a Fine at which point it will stop. This is used where you want to repeat some, but not all, the material.

If you want to jump back and then play through to the end, just use a DS (with no Fine).

Nesting a DS jump inside a repeat could be illogical (in which case Dorico may refuse to obey!)

Brilliant! Thanks very much, @Janus  .

Couldn’t be clearer. Have fixed it now.

Even though it’s a pretty unnecessary example, I know have a model for places where it would be useful.

I suspect that the incorrect location of the DS jump inside the repeat will indeed have been the cause of the Cmnd+G Goto command not working.

Your help appreciated…
