[Request] Automatic transcription of intervals

Hello,

A way to automatically transcribe the intervals as in Fuxian counterpoint practice?

No, Dorico doesn’t provide any tools like this at the moment.

@prko I just use Lyrics for this. Works perfectly and is very fast to write (and having to manually writing it down is a good exercise in analyzing what the intervals are)

Thank you for sharing your experience.
How do you make numbers enclosed by a circle, which are then used to indicate dissonant intervals? I have no idea how to do this.

I indicate quality with a prefix - M3 vs m3 vs a3 or d3, P5 vs d5 (or a5), etc. As to dissonance memory serves and it’s not that onerous - all 4ths are dissonant as well as any 2nds or 7ths and any augmented/diminished intervals. Also, Peter Schubert’s book “Modal Counterpoint, Renaissance Style” is a better text to study this type of counterpoint. I studied Fux and Schubert is easier to understand with excellent examples and exercises.

Echoing @prko , I always required students to circle dissonances to (1) “structurally encourage” them to pay attention to their work; and (2) demonstrate that they knew which intervals were dissonant.

I want to know if requesting this feature will be consented to by at least some users. This feature is not useful for learners, but it is useful when writing books or preparing materials.

It’s always totally OK to tell the developers your feature request. They will decide if it’s a useful thing to build, and when to give priority to it. As they say, Dorico development is not a democratic process anyway.

Thanks! Done!

@dspreadbury
I request this functionality with the following

  • circled number for dissonance
  • ° for diminished interval and
  • superscript + for augmented interval.

For me the indication of intervals is as important as the indication of chords, steps as “Stufentheorie” with “Roman Numeral Analysis” and as “Funktionstheorie” with the abbreviation of functions and others as well as “figured bass”.

Implementing this functionality will save a great deal of time and effort in providing publications and teaching materials.

I was able to label intervals in Sibelius with their ManuScript scripting language, as a strictly amateur coder. Once Dorico adds scripting, or maybe(?) with Alexander Plötz’s tool, things like this should be doable without too much trouble.
