Request to the developers

As a composer, it would be a great advantage for me if there were some kind of layer function for notes that would not affect playback in any way.

In other words, a pure information layer that can be hidden with a single click if necessary, and that is neither played back nor printed.

This would allow you to make notes, circle certain notes or add other notes, arrows, etc., which you could then continue working on the next day.

See screenshot. (This was just quickly made in Preview on a Mac without any particular purpose, but it should illustrate what I mean). I think every composer would need this, and I think it would be easy to programme.

Thank you.

It doesn’t have the same graphic capabilities, but you can get much of the same functionality with Comments.

Whoops, there goes another programmer fairy!

Funny enough you may have found the one and only thing Sibelius can do while Dorico can’t because in Sibelius you can indeed annotate and highlight stuff on the fly. But jokes aside, you can already do this in Dorico but it just happens not to be a circle but a frame, and more specifically you can create text frames in engrave mode and add a border to them, then you can easily adjust their shape, size and position. For arrows, the default lines work very well, since -again- in Engrave you can move them freely. I’ve done this many times while teaching.

THank you very much! Very kind. Happy New Year!

As a programmer of 40 years experience, never assume anything is ‘easy to program’. often what you think is easy is very difficult and what you think is hard may be trivial. It’s always hard to say. And on the forum, members tend to think it is not appropriate to tell Steinberg developers what you think is easy.

I will say that having layers would be great and being able to specify the Z-ordering of objects would be very useful (Lilypond can do that).
