Required sound libraries?

When I installed Dorico on a new machine, I only installed the modules that were marked as “recommended.” However, now opening Dorico, I get an alert that essential components are missing and that I must install them. Among those listed are “Indian Drum Basics” and “Olympus Choir Micro.” Are these really essential? I’m not planning to do any writing for Indian drums and although I do notate music for choir, I don’t really need a special sound library for this. In all, the four “essential” components are many GBs of software that I’d rather not add. Why are these “essential”?

You can ignore the warning, as long as you solemnly swear you will never complain about missing any of those sounds for playback. :). As to why, I don’t work for Steinberg but I believe the user base is diverse and they have far more of their new users who have a problem because they did not download them. For myself, it’s a minor amount of space compared to my other libraries, and I do find a use for them - largely because I pull up a score I started on the iPad version or maybe someone shares a project… your choice of course,

Ok, fair enough. I did end up installing all of them, but weirdly don’t see any way to use them in play mode. I only can see Halion Sonic and something called Dorico beep. Meanwhile, can’t get any sound at all. May have to completely uninstall and reinstall all of Dorico.

Nah, just apply the Halion playback template to your project.

As @gdball suggests, apply a Playback Template (Play>Playback Template…).
This will reload your sound setup and choose a sound for every instrument in your score.

Note: If your project does not have playback activated (ie the transport power button is not blue), this action will be greyed out.

Every factory template uses Halion Sonic7 as the VST and will load into it sounds from a set of Steinberg libraries (Iconica Sketch, Halion Symphony Orchestra, Halion Sonic Selection etc.) depending on which version of Dorico you are running.

HALion Sonic is the VST player, which plays all the samples that come with Dorico.
