Rest in part for empty pickup bar

See my two screenshots. My pickup bar is a 1/8 bar with the time sig hidden. In the score the rest appears as I want it; in the part it appears as whole note rest. Unhiding the 1/8 time sig doesn’t change anything. Any suggestions from anyone? Thanks!

It is probably possible to fix, but if it is an option here to use the native pickup bar functionality, you could set the time sig to 5/4,0.5 and hide it if you don’t want it to be seen. That might be more efficient.

Beautiful—worked perfectly. Thanks!

I am having the same problem as Peter_Lurye, but I already have the pickup bar setup as a 4/4,2. (Mine is a two-beat pickup bar in 4/4 meter.) The score layouts are correctly showing two quarter/crotchet rests, but all of the part layouts are showing a whole bar rest.
I would like the parts to show two crotchet/quarter rests, so everyone knows it’s just two beats, not four… Help??

Can you share a cut down version of your project that shows the issue?

Honestly, I don’t know how…

If it’s a small project, you can just post the whole thing. Otherwise, it can be helpful to post only a part of it, as long as we can still see the issue.

To cut down your project, first do File > Save As to save your project under a new name, to avoid making unwanted changes to your working project. If the project contains multiple flows, delete all flows except for the one that exhibits the problem. If the project contains multiple players, delete all players except for the one that exhibits the problem. If the problem is isolated to a particular bar or passage, then use the Shift+B popover to remove all other bars (e.g. select a note or rest in the bar after the problem passage, type Shift+B and enter a huge negative number like -9999 to delete all of the remaining bars in the flow).

Using the graphic slice tool for the first time…

Not a screenshot, please – the actual Dorico project file. You can drag it into the edit window here, or you can use the upload button.

I have cut it down to three players and only three bars and the file is STILL over 4MB, so the forum won’t let me upload it.. WTF??

Apply the Silence playback template before saving.

NICE! That did it.

Here is the VERY cut down file, but you’ll see what I’m describing… Score shows two quarter rests, parts show whole bar.
ATTYA for Forum.dorico (1.4 MB)

It works at least by adding a chord symbol region on both flutes in the pick-up bar, but I don’t understand why it doesn’t work without. It seems like without the chord region, this pick-up bar is an unbreakable (multi-)bar rest.

ATTYA for Forum.dorico (1,5 Mo)

Me neither.

Well, I don’t understand WHY that worked, but it did. That’s enough for me to be comfortable putting this out on stage tomorrow… Thank you, everybody!!

Because it’s a multi measure rest for some reason, and the chord symbol region breaks it.

This really is a strange one. @mfabulich, did this file originate as an XML import by any chance?

Yes! It was an XML import! John Barron guessed that, too (on Facebook). What is it about this oddity that tipped you off?

Mainly the fact that it appeared impossible to recreate this in a new project and that I couldn’t find any mention of such an issue in previous forum posts. Somehow XML files can create things that otherwise can’t exist in Dorico. :magic_wand:
