Finale refugee here
When entering music in real time using MIDI keyboard, how do I enter rests ? In finale, I entered a number without playing a note. How to do this is dorico?
When playing in notes, I get the played sound plus a ‘double’ sound when note is entered. How to avoid this? Plus, latency pretty poor.
I always want to hear piano sound. I didn’t want to hear the instrument I’m entering notes on. How to?

This is the different and beautiful thing about Dorico - you don’t enter rests. Just press the space bar to advance the cursor. The rests will appear retroactively in the correct notation based on the meter and note values.
You can turn off MIDI thru. Or you can mute the track in the mixer (this is what I prefer, especially when I am recording in MIDI to a click).
By the way, this applies to note values as well. You almost never need to input ties. This was input using consecutive dotted 8ths:
This was input as a half note, then one command to extend its value (which can be repeated, or reversed):
Think of these durations like a piano roll: “absolute” durations. Let Dorico notate them correctly.

However, if I enter an eighth note and then want a quarter note rest, ?.. if I advance with the space bar I’ll get the wrong rest. And if I hit a number value I’ll get a note and not a rest
Only if you’re using pitch-first, which is not the Dorico default. In that case, use the arrow to advance the cursor.
As a former Finale user, I understand the pitch-first thing. I’ve acclimated. I do still prefer it for composing. For copyist work, duration first is much better!
Ty. I’ll experiment. Much appreciated
