Retrospective Record puzzle

I am trying, for the first time, to use the Retrospective Record command. The manual says that it causes the played notes to be input from the selected rhythmic position. But that is not what I am finding.

If, during playback, I play some notes while the playhead is in bar 5, then stop playback and hit Retrospective Record, the notes are input at bar 5 even though the selected rhythmic position is in bar 1. It makes no difference whether I selected bar 1 before or after playing the notes.

If I play the notes while the playhead is in bar 5, and make a selection in bar 10 before hitting RR, the notes are not input at all. But if I then make a selection in bar 1, and hit RR again, they are input at bar 5.

Can anyone explain please?

I am on Dorico 6.0.10.6032.

I must admit, I’ve never used that command. I imagine you use it while in Write Mode. You’ll likely need to have played a few bars of music on your MIDI keyboard, which will then be written down (starting from the rhythmic position where you place your caret).

Can confirm but not explain…

I see that in a video two years ago Anthony Hughes said RR inputs the notes as if you had been recording ⎯ which, if true, would make it irrelevant where the selection was.

From the Dorico Help:

Result
All the notes you played on your MIDI device during the previous playback are input on the selected staff, starting from the selected rhythmic position.

I know what the manual says, thanks. The point is that the command does not do what the manual says it does.

The material will be input at the corresponding position where you played it during playback. So if you start playback from bar 1, and then play on your MIDI keyboard in bar 4, when you stop and then trigger Retrospective Record, the material will appear in bar 4, even if you have something selected in bar 1.

There’s no option to make the material appear at the position of the selection – aside from cutting and pasting it there after the fact, of course.

I am on the case, I’ll get this corrected in the latest (v6) manual as soon as possible. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Daniel, thanks. That’s the same as in a DAW, and what I would have expected. But it seems that the notes are not input at all if the selection is at a position later than that at which the notes are played. Is this a bug?

Yes, it looks like one! I’m not sure what’s going on there, but I’ll investigate.
