Return To Default (Factory) Parameters

When I first moved from Finale to Dorico in August of ’24, not knowing much about the software, I turned lots of parameters into my default set. Now that I am better acquainted with Dorico and have made various templates that I use, I would like for all my parameters to go back to the factory setting so I can start fresh with new projects that might be different from my templates. How do I revert my Dorico Pro 6.2 parameters back to their original factory settings? Will this affect Dorico files I’ve already created or only new files I want to create? Thanks in advance for any and all helpful replies.

Hi, Jim @JPayne!

You can do it via Library Manager (Library > Library Manager). From manual, page 962:

More here: Library Manager • Dorico Pro Help • Reader • Steinberg

It will affect only new files, but not new files created from project templates.

With respect to @RafaelBorba and @Vadian, I don’t think their answers quite address your question.

The Library Manager lets you compare the settings of the currently open project to factory settings (or to your defaults, or to another project). It also lets you apply factory (or other) settings to the open project, but it does not affect your saved defaults.

The quickest way to return Dorico parameters to a factory state is to delete files from your user config folder, which is c:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Steinberg\Dorico 6 on Windows and /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Dorico 6 on Mac.

You can safely delete all of the files in that folder (I would leave the subfolders alone), and they will be recreated with factory defaults when you next start Dorico. However, if you want to leave things like your custom key commands, jump bar commands, and application preferences in place, I would suggest deleting only these files:

  • engravingOptions.xml
  • layoutOptions_parts.xml
  • layoutOptions_scores.xml
  • notationOptions.xml
  • userLibrary.xml

If you want to be safe, you can back these files up somewhere instead of deleting, and then you can restore them if you want.

Once you have done this, all new projects will use the factory settings – except for projects started from a template, as @Vadian noted: those projects will use the settings that were saved as part of the template.

If you have an existing project that you want to restore to factory settings, or to a your current user defaults, that’s where you would use the Library Manager, on a per-project basis.

My thanks to all of you for your help. Your answers are exactly what I need to know. I appreciate how many Forum contributors are so very helpful with their expertise.

There are no files in my Mac Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Dorico 6 folder. What have I done incorrectly? I should see some of the files you list in there shouldn’t I? Now I’m really confused.

You need to go into your User library, not the Library that is direct visible in your Macintosh HD (which is a different one) .

The User library is hidden per default (to avoid unwanted changes).
To view the user library you can go, from the Finder, to menu Go, then keep Option pressed and you will see the Library appear: click on it to open it.

There are methods to make the User library permanently visible (you can google: make macOS library permanently visible).
Once it is permanently visible, inside your Home folder, you can drag it to the side bar on the left, to have it always available.

That worked. Thank you Christian. I appreciate it.
