Rhythmic augmentation

Hello there,

when doing rhythmic augmentation/diminution in insert mode with alt-shift and the L/R arrow keys I noticed it wont go shorter than eight notes. But I have seen people do it in videos. Does this have something to do with the time signature?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Rythmic augmentation.dorico (434.6 KB)

Adjust the rhythmic grid in the bottom left-hand corner of the project window to a resolution shorter than eighth notes.

It’s unclear to me how you can use this feature for rhythmic augmentation / dimnution because these require scaling all the notes rhythmic values by a consistent ratio, not remove / add a specific rhythmic value for all. This will only work if you started with all notes in the same rhythm.

Is there a way to do actual augmentation / dimunition?

Write>Edit duration>Double (halve) note duration. Combined with insert mode might be the answer, IIRC it doesn’t work (properly) with tuplets.

Since I mentioned insert mode, I would strongly advise (specially to new Dorico users) to read the documentation on insert mode, it is a very powerful tool, but can produce some unexpected results if not used properly (if you forget to turn it off for example).

It’s nice that it’s an option but unfortunately my use case is a 2:3 or 3:2 relationship which doesn’t seem to be supported.

Converting from compound meter to simple meter is a nightmare in dorico right now because you literally have to do it note by note.

@dspreadbury Would it be difficult to support a 3:2 or 2:3 relationship here? I feel like that should be doable.
When augmenting in 3:2, a non-tuple note becomes dotted, and a 3-tuple note is removed (i.e. becomes regular rhythmic value).
The reverse would be: a dotted note (i.e. a note divisible by 3) becomes undotted, otherwise a 3-tuple will be used.
Irregular tuples should keep there numerator and change the denominator.

At the moment, the routines we have for scaling notes are very simple and can only handle doubling and halving. We do plan to extend these features in future, but I can’t say for sure when this will happen.
