Rhythmic rewriting of a score

Hello,

How to convert the rythm of a score.

for example, I want to convert 2 bars at tempo 140 with 4 half notes into 1 bar at 70 with 4 quarter notes.

Thank’s
david

As far as I know, It’s not possible in one solution. This is such a basic feature it blows my mind that no one ever thought about it. I think the guys at Steinberg have never actually worked with scores in their lives.

No, Riccardo, of course, we’ve been developing notation software for a quarter of a century, but we’ve never actually used it, not once. None of us can even read music! It’s a wonder we can tie our own shoelaces or cross the road without getting hit by a bus…

David, you can very easily use Insert mode to achieve this. Activate Insert mode, select the notes you want to change into quarter notes, and hit 6. All of the selected notes will be set to quarter notes, and Dorico will close up the gaps that would have been between them if you had simply shortened each of them. Dorico won’t change the tempo automatically in this instance, but you can easily do that either by editing the existing tempo, or adding a new tempo marking at the new position.

If you want to do this over a more extended passage with a variety of note values, use Write > Edit Duration > Halve Note Durations, again with Insert mode engaged.

Halving note duration only affects the value of the notes, not the entire musical passage. You know this as well, and the user’s request is different.

Not if Insert Mode is on.!!

Yes, if you also want to change the time signature, you do have to do that as a separate step, that’s correct.

Thank you for your answer but this only works in the case where all the notes have the same basic duration.
If in my measure at tempo 140 I have 1 quarter note, 2 eighth notes and 1 half note, I don’t have a function to set the tempo to 70 and divide the duration of each note by 2, I have to rewrite everything!!
not practical at all
Currently I am working on a philharmic (200 measures with 19 instrumentalists)…
the conductor wishes to divide the tempo by 2 and therefore the durations of the notes for reading comfort.
you can imagine the rewriting work!!

@Davv, you just moved the goal posts.
There are functions that will halve (or double) the rhythmic values of notes; perhaps those would be helpful.

David, as I say, you cannot do it in a single step, but you can do it in a few short steps. You can adjust the tempo in one step, you can adjust the time signature (if desired) in another step, and you can halve the note durations of all the notes in one final step. This should take only a minute or two.

The Double/Halve Note Durations commands don’t work well with tuplets, so you will have to handle those manually, but in other respects you should find that you can take care of this relatively quickly.

LOL !!!

Just tried this and it works a treat!! I converted a piece in 2/2 to 2/4 and it easily handled it ( insert mode is the key) it was a simple process to change the meter to 2/4 once the grunt work had been done. I didn’t have any triplets in this.
