Roland Fantom EX - MIDI Device Script, Just Patches

Here’s a script (NOT a MIDI Remote) for the Roland Fantom EX, containing all the presets as found in Roland’s pdf file for the Fantom EX here: https://www.roland.com/global/support/by_product/fantom_8_ex/owners_manuals/
( [English] FANTOM-6EX/FANTOM-7EX/FANTOM-8EX Sound List [PDF])

Download: roland fantom-ex.zip (27.7 KB)

Installation:

  • Decompress the downloaded file. A txt file will be generated (roland fantom-ex.txt).

  • Place this txt file inside the Scripts folder of your version of Cubase.
To be precise, on Windows, place it under:
    %AppData%\Roaming\Steinberg\Cubase \Scripts\Patchnames\inactive\roland .
    On Mac:
    /Users//Library/Preferences/Cubase /Scripts/Patchnames\inactive\roland .

  • Open Studio→More Options→MIDI Device Manager…

  • Click Install Device, navigate to the entry Fantom EX (Roland) and click OK.
A popup should now show up, asking for the MIDI Port of the Device. Here we choose the MIDI Output for our device. On my system it’s Fantom 6-7-8 .

Now, whenever we add a MIDI Channel we can set its output to our device, and we can use the internal browser of Cubase to select our patches.

Here’s a screenshot of a MIDI track:

Welcome to this forum!

Sure, it can be of help when we want to control the patches from inside Cubase, especially when using the Fantom as a Rompler, and this is why I uploaded the file.

I personally don’t use it, since I like to keep the patches inside the scene. Two reasons:

  1. I tweak them, so as you know we have to save them as new presets. This means, that if we want consistency we have to either enter manually the new patches to the MIDI Device setup, or extend the MIDI Device to properly handle all available parameters. I thought about this for a moment, it didn’t make much sense to me, since we have the scenes functionality.

  2. I always have an arrangement (both song mode and groups) for live usage inside the scenes. This way, while I do tweak/mix/master my tracks in Cubase, I still have this “different” feel for lives.
