When playing back with the Iconica Sketch, the percussions’ rolls are very low in volume (volume of hits is normal).
Welcome to the forum, @hiroger0008. Are you using one of the supplied playback templates? Provided you’re using one of the default playback templates, Dorico should be choosing the appropriate expression map (called Iconica Sketch Percussion Map) automatically – check in Play mode that both the Ex. map and Perc. map drop-downs are set to the right value.
I am using the default playback template (and the correct expression map). The problem still exists.
Can you supply an example project file?
I am having the same issue. The volume in general is very low using iconica sketch orchestral percussion. When I open the Halion engine and look at how it handles the playback it seems to be stuck at ppp.
And on another note: It seems the abillity to solo the percussion, is gone.
Using Groove agent and Iconica Sketch Percussion.
Make sure that you have the Iconica Sketch Percussion Map expression map assigned for that channel, as well as the Iconica Sketch Percussion Map, er, percussion map. They’re called the same thing, but they both need to be set.
Both are assigned correctly.
Which Expression map should I use for Groove Agent or is that empty for a reason?
Groove Agent doesn’t require an expression map since (so far as I know) there are no samples that require any volume type other than velocity.
Same problem here. Does anyone have a solution? I can barely hear the drums. I’ve also found the editing the instrument and auditioning the sounds using the keyboard at the bottom is a huge mystery. The dynamic shown is always ppp and selecting the “roll” or “hit” button does nothing. I’ve found this kind of thing auditioning other sounds too (always ppp and other anomalies). I have discovered that sometimes, but not always, clicking at the top of the key creates a softer note that clicking on the bottom.
Which instrument(s) in particular are you writing for, Steve?
Hi, I came here looking for a solution and as it turns out I can provide you with one. Using the roll with medium mallets on a Timpani in Iconica Sketch I found there was no way to go beyond the ppp level. The velocity sensitive feature of the keys did nothing. I found using the modulation wheel on the gui raised the volume, allowing you to swell the volume for dramatic effect.
This would suggest using an expression map that uses both velocity and CC1 (modulation wheel) for dynamics could be a good idea for this instrument.
The timpani in Iconica Sketch uses the Iconica Sketch Timpani expression map by default, which is already set up in just this way.
So being a complete newb I will ask; “How might one set up and apply said expression map?” The Readers Digest precis version is fine. Yes I really am that old that I remember the mainstay of monthly midwestern literature.
It should all happen automatically, Peter. Provided you’re using one of the factory playback templates that includes Iconica Sketch, when you add a timpani to your score, Dorico will load the right sound, and automatically assign the right expression map.
