Routing external audio into an Instrument track

As the title suggests is there a way of routing audio INTO (not out) of an instrument track?

Scenario, I have VSTi instrument editor for my Dave Smith Mopho synth. I want to create an instrument track and have the external audio from the synth running into that track. The editor is really just a fancy gui controller for the synth.

At the moment I have to set up the editor as an instrument track and separately run the audio from the Mopho into an audio track. Not a huge deal, would just be alot more elgant to have it all on one instrument track. I know this can be done in Reaper, S1, Logic and Ableton.

Am I missing something or simply not possible?

The instrument plugin would need to support being fed an audio input. Cubase does not offer audio inputs on instrument tracks.

I am curious to see how this is done. Please provide links to videos or manuals for all 4 DAWs that you mention.

Hi Johhny

Here’s a link to the help page. It looks like other daws do it using external effects channels?

Ok, this can probably be done in Cubase Pro as well, but not in Cubase Artist or lower. You would need to set up your hardware gear as an external effect (audio connections → external effect). This effect can then be loaded as an insert effect onto a instrument track’s channel.
Not 100% sure if it works as I don’t have anything like it in my own setup in order to check it. So, good luck.

Addendum: if you want to record the synth as audio you could use render in place. However, you would end up with an additional audio track for that audio file.

Interesting, didn’t consider the hardware effect route at all. I’m on Pro so I’ll give this a go this evening.

Your suggestion is much appreciated, thanks!

Set it up as an external instrument in Audio Connections.

Thankyou Johnny, this works 100%!

For those interested. I setup the Mopho NOT as an instrument, but as an external effect. After creating a VST instrument track with Mopho Desktop Editor plugin, I then inserted the previously created Mopho external effect ino that channel and it works 100% reliably and render in place can be used to convert to audio if need be.

The only caveat in this instance is that I have to hide the midi interface connected to the Mopho from Cubase otherwise the editor plugin cannot communicate with the synth. Which is fine as it’s the only non USB midi synth that I currently own.
