Routing question: Real-time Scale Quantization in VST Live

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some technical advice on how to achieve real-time Scale Quantization within my VST Live workflow. I’m trying to optimize my live setup to include these processing steps before the sound generation.

Specifically:

  1. Scale Quantization: I would like to use a MIDI plugin (like Scaler 2) to constrain my input notes to a specific scale. What is the best way to route this MIDI signal before reaching my instruments (such as HALion Sonic or Kontakt) within the VST Live environment? Is there a specific track/stack configuration you recommend?
Any suggestion on how to set this up effectively would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help!
  1. Scale quantization: VST Live to this point doesn’t support MIDI plugins, but that’s under development. And if I’m not completely mistaken, there’s no option to filter MIDI (note) input based on scales.

  2. As for micro tunings (you asked for that in your initial post): the same is true here.

However: there are options to partially circumvent the current restrictions. To do so it’s necessary that your plugin provides and announces its own MIDI port(s) that can in consequence be addressed by VST Live.

One plugin that behaves like that is Arturia’s Pigments with its generative sequencer. If Pigments can do what you intend to, I don’t know, of course. But that would be, for the moment, the path to follow.
