SAVE AS NEW VERSION: Add note for version information

In development of a project, there are revisions, milestones etc that form the history. There are also needs to access that information later. Atm, while there are project notes etc, you need to open projects to even get an idea of whats in them. You can of course add custom info in the filename but this can break simple naming convention and its unwieldly to condense important information

In other software I use for industrial design/Architecture eg inventor, Archicad, when you save a new version, it prompts for a version name with notes. This is so helpful because this information is visible in the browser and you dont have to open projects to get to it…you can even filter in browser, eg show only milestones
Tracking
Vocal comps
Pre final mix
etc

@Steinberg, please consider why mature programs with developmental perspective have had this sort of feature for a long time and how it can really benefit Cubase with a professional way to especially manage large files with longer production spans

I always save my projects with my own addendum number when I want info in the title.

Project XYB-0001_Project start

then when I save new version, it’s:

Project XYB-0001_Project start-01
Project XYB-0001_Project start-02

etc

when it’s time for a milestone, I ctrl+Shift+s save as and start a new tier

Project XYB-0002_Drum Production
Project XYB-0002_Drum Production-01
Project XYB-0002_Drum Production-02

Project XYB-0002_Drum Production-02b - great ideas

etc

For sure.
I do similar and thats good for generic/tier 1 info…obviously very 101 but thats not what Im talking about. We can see that its starts to get quite verbose even with your example. Thats where other programs have a great feature which I didnt think much of until I watched a vid on just that side of management and became really clear; now having it in other progs makes me really miss it in Cubase.

eg In “Summary” as per pic…(I dont have the grafx pc booted atm) you can put detailed info for that history. There are filetypes that can use System os storage for it. I do a lot of experimentation so would nice for those who do as well…

By extension, would be great too if the project notes could be available in the browser too for fine details. I often note mic positions, cables and pres in track notes which would be amazing to be able to jump to a project and check it…but thats probs a bit too much and if they are good I put them into the studio spreadsheet as a got to…but that gets complicated with pics etc too…

If what you are doing works for you…then great…Im only suggesting maybe we can do a lot better by borrowing from others with decades of prog dev

Ever wanted to go back to a specific tracking session and wonder why the mic sounded so good on a particular take? Thats whey the track notepad is sooo good. Just wish it stored images or at least links to a local image lib

I changed a word in your quote because SB would be the ones (obviously) doing any code change and only they know how fast they can pull requested rabbits out of the 24hrs-in-day hat

I intuit this would be major major code stuff.

On the other hand, seems to me (a Windows guy who will never use a Mac again), that I can easily do my interpretation solution of the scenario you present (which I may do now that I think about it).

It would simply involve a win11 notepad located in the same folder as my Cubendo folder of “the song”. The notepad can have notes 5 miles long…or I can have a notepad of each revision…or any number of spin-off ways.

I can also open the notepad contents to add/modify while Cubendo is running…or NOT when Cubendo is running. A method I can use with or not/with my general ways of saving my Cubendo work…ie save-as "hitSong1–May2 7:04pm…etc.

At any rate, you’ve given ME an idea

To do a proper job I think it should be left outside of Cubase. Maybe a fully featured plugin, but not part of Cubase proper. And if images were stored in the CPR file, it could grow considerably in size.
Boris Vegas (as it’s called now) has a Notes feature, wherein you can add notes and link them to a specific point in the timeline. I think that would be a nice addition to Cubase.

I wrote my own Notebook program (not particularly sophisticated but it uses RichText for formatting, and can use images). It sits in the System Tray (or whatever it’s called now) so it’s always there when I need it.

any image used in any part of the program doesn’t need to be and isn’t stored in the .cpr, but in the project folder hierarchy, as are track pictures currently.

'Tis true. But… And there’s always a but!
But then you’d end up with the problem of Cubase not finding those files if they’ve been moved, or if the project is opened on a different computer, just as with audio files.

I tend to agree with this.
But we all have different priorities - frinstance, I’d rather have VU meters in the mixers, over a documentation feature.

Of course…I dont think I implied that. As with any housekeeping, just a folder and a link to the file would be fine

I def didnt mean anything other than eg Fusion 360 or inventor…
As with any system, its just tier 2 repository but its the access

Even just exposing the projects notes into a browser accessible field eg max 256 characters would be amazing and helpful

But wouldnt it just be a relative link to local folder be no diff to the current scenario and a backup/carry project to other machines?

In a perfect, and organised, world, yes indeed.
I’m just going by the number of people here who seem to have issues with Cubase not being able to find project audio files, or the people who use audio files that are scattered here, there and everywhere and wonder why they can’t back up a project.
I should add here that I’m not against the FE, on the contrary. I’m sure most people use some form of documentation for their projects, and would like it to be integrated into Cubase. I’m just not sure it could be introduced in such way that it would work satisfactorily for the majority.

It really bothered me for a while eg…files ending up here and there. I learnt that its much easier to just do a back up first so all the files are in one place…havent had issues for that stuff since.

You could have a Keyboard Maestro trigger a dialog box that writes to a running changelog and only then triggers the Save As in Cubase.

Im on PC…no keyboard maestro but we have ahk…i use that for so much but this is a bit deeper as its the way that info is rendered to the user in the context of historical lookup with Cubase keeping all the the data.
Iike I said, I would be happy to just have project notes appear in one of the file details/display colum in browser for OS. Then you can search on it too.
I think the “save new version” is ample but the examples in the posts highlight that external files are just not as viable and simple is better in this case…ie there are clear examples of the benefits…look up fusion 360 version history…
