I recently updated and discovered the “Save” menu option never grays out as it formerly did. If I click Save after making changes to the score, the menu option remains black. Meaning I can’t tell whether I’ve saved my current work. Is this change intentional or did the programmers overlook something. Why the change.
I just tested earlier releases of v6 as well as v5, and the Save menu option isn’t grayed out in any of them (on Windows).
On Windows, a file with changes is indicated by an asterisk after the file name in the title bar.
There’s probably something similar on Mac.
Nope. On Mac the save option has always been grayed out once the file has been saved and no new changes have occurred. Now on version 6.2.30.6245 May 29, 2026 the save command remains black so I have no indication whether my recent work has been saved.
Hi @musicplay, on Mac you can clearly see unsaved changes in the icon on the upper edge of the window: a file with unsaved changes has a dimmed-out icon:

And I just tried in Dorico 5 on macOS, and no: the save command remains black after saving the file. So I cannot confirm what you say.
OK. I see that. I never realized that before. Thanks. But I still prefer the former “graying out” of the save menu.
I can’t explain why your Mac is not behaving the same as mine always did, but I’ve always had a habit of relying on the graying out of the menu item to know whether I’ve saved the file changes and now I can’t do that.
Mhhh… interesting. Maybe someone else can check this on their systems.
I’m on a MacBook M1 Pro running Tahoe 26.5.1. I’ve been using Dorico since the first version came out and I use it a lot. I have over 215 Sax quartet arrangements published through Hal Leonard that were all created in Dorico. So I am well aware of how the software has always behaved. What computer and OS are you running?
What version did you upgrade from?
I didn’t doubt that at any time: I was just asking for other people to share their experience, to see if there is a pattern… (I checked with MacOS Sequoia on a intel iMac 2020)
What ever the previous one was. I always update right away when a new version comes out.
So you were already on 6.2.20 and just did the minor upgrade to 6.2.30? Just trying to determine what version last had the behavior you want.

So I can attest to what you are seeing (not seeing). Upon save, Mac version does not gray out Save in the File menu. And, there is most definitely not an asterisk beside the filename as @asherber has on a Windows machine.

Right, but @Christian_R showed what the equivalent is on Mac.
I wouldn’t call that “clear” as I only was able to see that after you mentioned it. On my Mac Studio, it is a very faint change that is, indeed, fairly unnoticeable. I would rather have seen an asterisk as on the Windows system.
That’s what I recall. I don’t look at that File menu frequently any more because I do the CMD-S keystrokes whenever I finishing entering anything, even 1 note, out of habit from using other notation software that would hang without notice at times.
Not sure that’s an equivalent. It is a faint change that does not catch one’s attention at all unless actually looking for it. I know now but I probably would not have noticed that oddity any time soon. It seems rather strange.
In Logic no greyed out Save (for file with no unsaved changes) on my system, while the dimmed-out icon (for file with unsaved changes) is there as expected:
