Score layout to always number 00

hi folks,

Is it possible to make Dorico start numbering layouts from number 0?

It’s quite standard (from the Finale times, I guess) that the Full Score layout is 00, followed by 01 for Flute 1 and down the list.

Is there a way to make this happen? Otherwise I have to manually rename the score layout PDFs when I export them, which, over many scores and revisions, becomes a strange thing.

This sort of thing has been requested many times before. Unfortunately, you can’t get Dorico to start from 0, and Dorico numbers score and part layouts separately, which is why the first one of each gets the number 01.

Scoring Notes had an article last year about alternative approaches to layout numbering. Basically, you can number your score layout by hand as 100, which will keep it separate from part layouts, although it will be at the bottom of the sorted list rather than the top.

I think there are a few points here, which have been made before on the forum (and in the Scoring Notes article).

  1. There should be a way to number exported PDFs so that no two PDFs have the same number
  2. When sorted alphabetically, it’s useful for scores to be separate from parts; if they have the same number, as in the Dorico default, then they get intermingled
  3. Some people would like to be able to number the full score 00, which addresses both of the above points

One problem with the Dorico default is that if you’re looking at your PDFs in the file system, alphabetical order will give you:

01 - Flute
01 - Full Score
02 - Oboe
02 - Other Score
03 - Clarinet

Personally, I don’t think that’s useful in terms of finding what you’re looking for.

The method in Scoring Notes works well, although it does put scores at the bottom, which is not what some people are used to. It would be nice to have some options around how Dorico numbers layouts so that that kind of part/score separation could be done more automatically.

Since you can have multiple score layouts in Dorico, I don’t think it’s practical to have a rule that all of them should be numbered 00. But I do think it would be nice to have an option to manually number a particular layout as 00, since that would help in many cases.
