I recently broke an old laptop and have transferred all files in to my new one (which is the same make/spec). All the files seem to have transferred ok but when I tried to record on the track, I get this horrible screeching sound. It happens on the playback on any new track as well as whenever I turn on monitoring. I’ve tried different drivers (Steinberg as well as ASIO4ALL) , I’ve tried turning everything off and on and nothing has worked. The same software works on Reaper. So I’m at a loss. Any ideas?
That sounds like you might have an Audio feedback loop somewhere. Some Audio Interfaces (you don’t mention what you are using) have a loopback feature to facilitate recording ‘system’ sounds like Audio from browsers. This can easily be misconfigured to create feedback loops. You can also create them by just routing a signal back into itself within the DAW (although Cubase tries to prevent this).
I think the 2nd cause is more likely in your case as it doesn’t occur in Reaper and if it was a setting on your interface I’d expect that to show up in both DAWs.
