I hope I can express this properly.
When I want to enter notes I use Shift+N to get started, however most of the time the “Select” button is also active and I have to deselect it to enter notes.
Is this normal, or is there a way to direct enter notes?
Thank you,
I’m fairly new here as well, but as far as I can tell that’s “normal”. You have to mentally keep track of what state Note Input mode, Select mode, Pitch before Duration mode, dots and ties are in before you actually enter a note. That wouldn’t be so bad, except that Dorico also “helpfully” turns some of those on or off for you after you perform a seemingly unrelated action.
For me at least, tracking all these mini-modes is a mental distraction that pulls me out of the music and into the mechanics of the software. I suppose I will get used to it eventually.
As a software developer, it reminds me of the “vi” editor - there are those who can use it very effectively, and those who find it very frustrating. Personally, I walked out of one interview when told that working in vi was required.
Isn’t there a Preference to disable note input by mouse? That is what the select button is for.
It can be found at the Application Preferences under Note Input.
