Select note(s) at cursor via keyboard

Is there a way to select the note or notes at the current cursor position without using the mouse? It seems like the most common thing that I need to leave my keyboard(s) to do in Dorico. This was last discussed in 2019 (thread below), where the solution was essentially to leave note editing mode and then move the selected note (Esc-left-arrow, etc.) which is okay if the selected note is anywhere close to the cursor (as here), but when it’s something like: Oh! I’m editing lyrics and I notice that there’s a staccato missing – there doesn’t seem to be an easy way of making an edit with another tool without losing your place. Am I missing something? Can I make a plea to make this a function that at least could be mapped to some combination of keys (either by me or by default). Cmd-Enter and Ctrl-Enter all are juicily available on my Mac.

(Problem is how to select the B here (treble) without exiting cursor mode).

Previous discussion: marked solved, but only for the special case of the highlight being nearby.

Hi @Michael_Cuthbert,

not sure I understand what your needs are (you speak about editing lyrics with the caret activate, which I don’t know how should work…), but:

  • to add the accent on the B in your example, you could just reenter that note at the caret position overwriting the current one (clicking all the needed articulation shortcuts first). So you don’t move the selection, but overwrite the note at the desired caret position, [which will be then selected after that]:
    (On my german keyboard)
    + (to activate staccato)
    ü (to activate the accent)
    B (to re-input the note)
(But probably it is faster to exit the caret…)

  • If you are editing the lyrics, you could use TAB to switch between the lyric selection and the note selection, add the desired articulations, move at the desired position with the arrows, then TAB again and use Enter to open the lyrics popover:
