Selecting notes in D for iPad

If I want to transform one note in a chord and click on it ( with a pen) , often other chord notes are selected and highlighted too. So I have to deselect the not-wanted note, which is difficult too. How can I deselect notes? It seems to depend on the scale size. If the scale size is higher, it works better. With small scale sizes it’s really a pain. Is there any trick to select single notes in a chord?

Using Dorico for iPad without a proper Bluetooth keyboard (or magic keyboard or whatever they call it) is suboptimal. With the keyboard you should be able to use arrows to navigate through the notes.

It’s not just on iPad. Even on a desktop it can be difficult to select individual notes in a chord with the mouse at smaller zoom levels. Select on the outside of the note head away from the stem. That often helps.

Not sure how it would work on an iPad, but on a desktop version of Dorico, using the up/down arrow keys can let one isolate individual notes of a chord.

Alt-shift-click is also a very useful tool to select one particular object, since the selection cycles at each click on every selectable object at this spot.

Thanks for our hints. Using a Bluetooth keyboard in conjunction with an IPad is not what I prefer. It’s just the simplicity of just using an iPad without any add-ons ( beside a pen) is for me the main reason to use Dorico on iPad. I hope that Steinberg will take care of this issue and will make it easier to select single notes.

You can single-select notes of a chord on the iPad. If you want to select a few different notes: there is a “+” button to press. This is equivalent of holding the ctrl/cmd key on a keyboard.
Having said this, all can be done without an attached bluetooth keyboard - you even don’t need the pencil, using the fingers instead. Selecting individual notes is of course easier if you zoom in beforehand.

Thanks, I knew that I can select single notes with a finger or a pen, but it’s very inaccurate . If I tap exactly on one note even with a pen, often other notes are selected too. Of course it’s better , if I zoom in, but IMO generally the recognition of taps is not good in the app.

wibem, in my experience it just takes a bit of practise. I find the taps - even with the finger - extremely accurate. I just tried (in case something had changed), this selection without errors:

Talking about accuracy, there is a viola joke
What do lightning and the left hand fingers of a violinist have in common? They never strike the same spot twice.

Thanks, but why doesn’t it work for me ? If I tap on one note in a chord with a finger or a pen, often two notes are selected. E.g I have two notes above each and I tap on the lower note, often the higher note is selected too. Is there any trick to get just one note to be selected?

wibem, the only “trick” I used is to really zoom in beforehand. If you look at my above screenshot, that’s the whole working window on the iPad.
If you take the above example and practise:
tapping onto a stem - selects the whole chord
tapping onto the beam - selects all notes connected to that beam
tapping into the bar - selects all notes in that bar (in this specific example it’s gives the same result as tapping onto the beam)
now: tapping onto one note of a chord only selects that note only, but one has to be accurate “with thin fingers”. If you don’t manage at your first try, use the undo arrow and try again.
If it really doesn’t work, then your iPad touch interface would be out of synch; I doubt this - because you would also notice it in other applications.
