Hi, how can you change the preset and send a program change to an insert effect on an audio track? Need a reverb to change presets over time.
You can try creating a MIDI Track and set the output to your plugin in question. The plugin has to support receiving MIDI though.
Thanks, had tried that, but FX, (in this case IK Room reverb), donât seem to have as much midi support as instruments.
It feels odd that program change isnât as easily commonly as mix, or decay for e.g. ![]()
You should be able to just put the automation system in âPreviewâ mode, select the preset, select the Fill options you need, and then just âPunchâ the automation.
No need for âprogram changeâ per se for insert effects.
Preview is a Nuendo exclusive feature, Mattias.
The idea is to write any parameter change into the automation lane directly rather than program preset changes.
If Preview isnât possible then just omit that step and set automation âFillâ to the desired option, press play, change the preset, and then it should be written accordingly.
Correct?
According to the original post it seemed to have been about preset changes.
Sure, still @Johnny_Moneto 's suggestion succeeds at least partially. When we place our track to write mode, begin play, and then select a different preset of an insert (by the mouse) the altered parameters will be written. The âpartiallyâ comes from the fact that there are cases where not all internal parameters of a VST are exposed to a DAW,and even when exposed, some are not automatable, hence automation writing wonât reflect the preset change fully every time.
@skank, itâs not very clear to me. Do you want the preset change for rehearsing purposes, or for ordinary automation? Also, do you need more than 2 presets while performing? Because if itâs just two-three, you could use the Preset Previous/Next commands, and have these presets saved one after the other (in the alphabetic order) and recalled by these commands instead of a program change.
Not in Cubase. Donât know why, but wish it would.
Works here, but I only tried stock plugins.
Cheers, Steiny have implemented this for stock plugs, but it seems some 3rd party devs didnât wish to play along.
In this case please contact the maker of the plugin(s).
It has to be a problem with 3rd party developers individually then. Iâve multiple 3rd party plugins and have picked presets as a way to change parameters (while writing automation). Not all are coded equally well of course, and I indeed had problems with some combination of versions of Nuendo and Stratus/Symphony by iZotope (who absolutely sucks), better luck with preset recall with their newer Equinox, and so far no problems I can remember with FabFliterâs Pro-R reverb.
Essentially findings as well, found some to work by essentially recording every parameter change (as opposed to actually âswitchingâ presets), and found at least one culprit whom shall remain nameless which wonât play nicely.
Why not share so we know?

Can you have 2 instances of the plugin one active, one inactive then automate the inactivate/activate when needed.
Yes possible, but I had several preset changes planned (sound for picture), the sheer amount of instances needed may become unwieldy.
