This has to have been covered but I can’t seem to find the answer. I recorded an audio track without click. It’s pretty solid tempo-wise, but I want to have the grid align with the audio I’ve recorded, not align the audio I’ve recorded with the existing grid which does not match the tempo of the freely recorded audio. Sorry to pose such a basic question. This was deathly easy in Sonar.
Hi there,
it is fairly easy to do in Cubase, too.
There is an automatic mode and there is a manual mode.
For the automatic mode: Select the audio event. It really helps the algorithm if you can cut the event at the beginning to start on the 1. Go to the Project menu → Tempo Detection. Kindly have a look at the manual for a description of the upcoming dialog.
For the manual mode (which might also be necessary for any corrections in case the automatic detection was not always accurate) I will leave you this link to Jef’s video:
Thanks, Johnny!

The algorithm is a joke. It gets super confused even with sharp kick drum transients.
Logic’s smart tempo is miraculous compared to this. Studio One 7 also got a new better algorithm (and workflow) yesterday. Steinberg should really fix this as soon as possible. It’s 2024, and this is a perfect valid case for AI tech.
On the other hand, the time warp tool is very efficient and intuitive.
